SCOPE:
Microbiology staff work at the direction of the laboratory's Microbiology Section Supervisor. The incumbent is responsible for processing microbiology section samples, equipment maintenance, and continuity of the microbiology section operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Maintains an effective culture of laboratory safety.
* Keeps Microbiology Section Supervisor informed of daily production progress.
* Responsible for processing all microbiological assays. Plans work to execute analytical methods in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures. Suggests SOP changes to reflect method and workflow performance improvements and reduction of rework.
* Responsible for the operation and maintenance of analytical equipment to include qPCR and microarray molecular-biological platforms; Load and run analytical equipment; Analyze batch output for conformity to SOP; Perform preventive maintenance on analytical equipment.
* Responsibly manages the consumable and capital resources of the section and reports the needs to the Microbiology Section Supervisor.
* Proactively communicates needs and issues with Chemistry Section Supervisor and corporate staff as required.
* Demonstrates risk assessment and consideration of evidence with every decision, and appropriately prioritizes work.
* Ensures proper document control and forensic traceability of all work.
* Ensures that the methodologies used for each of the tests performed in the section are adequate and suitable for the respective matrices, and that results are accurate and reliable.
* Analyzes test results to generate and report Certificates of Analysis (COAs) to clients within established Turnaround Times (TAT).
* Works with the Laboratory Director, Quality Assurance Director, and Chief Scientific Officer to develop and implement a Laboratory Quality Assurance (LQA) program to assure the reliability and validity of the analytical data produced by the section.
* Initiates Corrective Action Reports (CARs) and Preventative Action Reports (PARs) when necessary.
* Receives the appropriate training and demonstrates standard process execution with results supportive of the Chemist's scientific reliability. Seeks ongoing and appropriate training and professional development. Complies with all policies and procedures established for monitoring laboratory personnel who conduct pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of testing to assure that they are competent and maintain competency; if necessary, completes remedial training or continuing education to improve skills.
* Ensures that the laboratory and environmental conditions are appropriate for the testing performed and provide a safe environment in which employees are protected from physical, chemical and biological hazards.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Microbiologist is responsible for conducting scientific operations within the microbiology chemistry section, and from time to time may be designated the Microbiology Section Shift Lead by the Laboratory Director. The Microbiology Shift Lead carries out responsibilities in accordance with applicable personnel policies and procedures, and all applicable laws. The Microbiology Section Shift Lead will:

* Train section personnel to operate and maintain equipment, to include the contents of SOP.
* Maintain strict adherence to SOP within microbiology section.
* Maintain culture of safety within the lab.
* Evaluate section personnel
* Schedule work within shift and ensures proper staffing for workload
* Report all non-conforming events to the Microbiology Section Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties responsibly. In addition, employee:

* Must be able to pass a background check prior to and periodically throughout employment.
* Must be able to obtain and maintain any necessary licensing requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will possess:
Bachelor of Science in Microbiology or related field.
Leadership experience.
Experience working in a regulated laboratory with a strict QA and QC programs.
Routine qPCR expertise required - bioMeriuex, Hygiena, BioRad, etc.
Standard food microbiology techniques - familiarity with USP, FDA-BAM, AOAC methods required.
Advanced degree preferred.
Experience with ICP-MS, ESI and CI LCMSMS, GCMSMS, and UV-Vis HPLC instruments preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community. Ability to draft articles for publication that conform to a prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
