Overview:

The Peery lab (https://peery.russell.wisc.edu/) is hiring a crew/lead researcher to help conduct their large-scale bioacoustics program in the Sierra Nevada in California. The researcher would report to a project manager while recruiting, training, and leading 2-5 technicians each summer to deploy, collect, and assist with processing data from acoustic recording units across the landscape in remote areas of the southern Sierra Nevada. The project is crucial to multiple well-funded projects and is expected to directly inform management planning and practices in an ecologically sensitive and high-profile region. The researcher would spend the remainder of the year (mid-August to mid-April) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, WI as part of the Peery research group. The fall/winter would be sent processing and analyzing acoustic data, while the spring would be spent largely on field preparation work.

The position ideally would start on February 1, 2023 but could be shifted slightly, if necessary, and includes a full-time salary with benefits package, including health insurance, and retirement. The position would be for 2 years with the potential to extend.

Responsibilities:

Provides technical expertise to fundamental and/or applied scientific research under the direction of senior research personnel or faculty.

55% Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures

10% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications

5% Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area

5% Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures

5% Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership

5% Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding

15% Supervision of temporary staff

Requirements:

Ideal candidates will have experience with acoustic data collection, geographic information systems, data interpretation and analyses, (especially with autonomous recording units). The applicant should have field experience with wildlife, or other natural history work, especially in remote areas, and leadership experience involving hiring, training, and independently supervising crews is a strong need. The applicant should demonstrate knowledge of assessing and addressing diverse crew needs, identifying safety concerns, as well as tailoring training and leadership accordingly. The candidate should possess excellent organizational, management, and office skills, as well as have experience with database management.

B.Sc in natural sciences required, M.S. degree preferred.  Candidates without the required degrees who have significant, relevant experience that fulfills the above requirements are encouraged to apply as well.

Valid driver's license and ability to be authorized to drive a UW vehicle.
