The Associate Director, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) provides strategic direction and leadership for Draper. The Associate Director of EHS is a key member of the Finance and Administration team and provides a wide range of EHS services to Draper.The Associate Director leads the EHS program, ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local laws/codes and working closely with all departments and offices to ensure that they are meeting regulatory requirements. The Associate Director develops and implements EHS training programs for employees and contractors involved with hazardous materials and equipment. The responsibilities require sound judgment, tact, and excellent oral and written communication skills.
The Associate Director functions as an integral member of the Draper Crisis Response Team and leads the internal haz/mat team and EMS team. The Associate Director will be required to be on site managing emergency services during times of building and/or community-wide critical incidents and emergencies that impact Draper.
The Associate Director of EHS reports directly to the Principal Director, Administration and directly manages and coaches a team of EHS professionals. Essential Functions:
- Provides strategic Environmental Health and Safety direction and leadership for Draper. Responsible for the development, implementation and management of all programs related to environmental health and safety.
- Continues to improve the safety culture through processes, training, and accountability.
- Develops, analyzes, and reports out on EHS metrics to Draper Leadership on all continuous improvement of EHS activities.
- Identifies, defines, and develops Draper's mandatory EHS training library and all associated training processes. This role ensures Draper staff is complying with all requisite trainings and ensures all mandatory training content is comprehensive and tracked through completion.
- Manages the EHS Audit program and reports all findings to Draper Leadership.
- Ensures compliance with applicable environmental and occupational health regulations. In addition, responsible for submitting EHS regulatory permits and reports and maintains compliance with OSHA, EPA, state and local EHS record-keeping and reporting requirements.
- Oversees hazardous waste, wastewater, air emissions, asbestos, and workers' compensation programs.
- Serves as Draper's Radiation Safety Officer and Biosafety Officer.
- Acts as Draper's liaison to external regulatory agencies for any environmental health and safety areas.
- Leads team to conduct investigations and root cause analysis to improve and eliminate EHS hazards. Leads Draper in crisis and incident response situations.
- Monitors regulatory arena for new or changing regulations and rulemaking.
- Good customer service skills and follow-through on issues.
- Must be self-motivated, well organized, have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, at all levels of the organization and with external contacts; must be proficient with MS Office technologies including Excel and PowerPoint, as well as internet and email tools.
- Masters or PhD degree in Science, EHS, or related field. 10-15 years' experience in directing/managingEHS and programs in a multi-facility environment at a corporate, education, or industrial setting with atleast 5 years in a university or research environment. Additional experience includes:
- Communicating with multiple business units, issuing directives and standards, acting as a consultant to other units or projects, making recommendations, and advising senior management.
- Knowledge in biosafety, chemical safety, radiation/laser safety, hazardous waste, risk management, workers' compensation, ergonomics, lab safety, and industrial hygiene.
- Managing business operations including budgeting, purchasing, vendor management, and inventory control.
- Project Management.
- Preparing scopes of work, bid processes, and service agreements.
- Preparing and managing an EHS Program manual, policies, and procedures.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
- Using computer based systems and software.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), OSHA 10
- and OSHA 30 training, or similar and advanced training and certifications in EHS standards and
- Best practices is desired.
Must have a proven commitment to the Environmental Health & Safety profession and be able todemonstrate this commitment through involvement in professional organizations and on-goingeducation.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. and climb stairs and ladders.Working Conditions: Must be able to attain a Secret Clearance.Travel: No more than two weeks per year (total)
