Job Description

Indiana University East, Richmond, IN, a primarily undergraduate institution, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Biology commencing August 1, 2023. Candidates for all full-time faculty positions should be "teacher scholars" who demonstrate a strong desire to excel in teaching, while maintaining an active research agenda. Teaching will be the primary responsibility of the faculty member being hired. Online delivery of programs is an important aspect of IU East's enrollment strategy and preference will be given to candidates with interest in online education.

The Department of Natural Science offers BS degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, and Human Life Science. In addition, we contribute to several IU-wide online programs, including the BA degree in Sustainability Studies, as well as Graduate Certificate/Master of Arts for Teachers programs in Biology and Chemistry. We also teach general education for all majors, as well as biology courses for students in nursing.
A particular focus of our department is providing undergraduate research and other experiential learning experiences. Most recent graduates are either working in laboratory and other positions that use students' science knowledge or are in graduate studies.

The ideal candidate will be a generalist who can teach with distinction a wide range of biology courses across the undergraduate curriculum. Teaching load will consist of a combination of face-to-face and online classes, including both lecture and laboratory sections. The faculty member will conduct research in cell, molecular and/or microbiology, broadly defined, and integrate undergraduate students into their research program. IU East will provide support to help establish the new faculty member's research laboratory but encourages faculty to seek external funding in support of ongoing research.

While online teaching is an essential aspect of our programs, regular presence on campus is important to our mission, and is therefore expected.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Tenure-track faculty are expected to:

• Teach introductory and upper-level biology courses, both in person and online, depending on department need, interest, and qualifications of faculty member.

• Maintain an active research agenda, which may include the scholarship of teaching and learning.

• Develop and lead a vibrant laboratory-based undergraduate research program that will interest biological science students. The willingness to mentor online (in addition to in-person) research students is desirable.

• Communicate subject matter clearly, correctly, and effectively. Use methods, materials, and technology appropriate to the subject matter.

• Manage the learning environment through accurate record-keeping, timely submission of grades and other reports, and enforce school and campus academic policies.

• Collect assessment data and participate in departmental strategies to improve the program.

• Advance the school and campus mission through service, such as advising, curriculum design, and participation in faculty governance.
