Primary Purpose of the Position:

To meet the challenges associated with climate change, it is crucial to lead with science and innovation. Investment in and deployment of cutting-edge biotechnologies will be crucial to ensure innovators, producers, and manufacturers are able to be part of the solution to climate change and drive an economic recovery.

The primary purpose of this position is to develop and evaluate climate policies of importance to the biotechnology industry. The position will pursue policies that incentivize the adoption of innovative, sustainable technologies and practices; and streamline and expedite regulatory pathways for breakthrough technology solutions. The ability to develop and maintain relationships and to work as part of a team is essential.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

· Create ambitious and measurable federal climate policy objectives, recommend advocacy positions, and ensure BIO maintains a sophisticated understanding of the policy landscape

· Lead all BIO policy development activity related to:

o Creating and improving carbon markets

o Fostering market pull incentives for investment in and use of innovative technologies and products that fight climate change

o Developing lower-carbon products

· Evaluate the current contributions of biotechnology to greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions and identify the emerging biotech solutions with the greatest potential to avert, and reverse, catastrophic climate change

· Support the Vice President, Agriculture and Environment in the development and implementation of policy strategies

· Lead assigned staff level Committees and working groups of biotechnology company climate experts to develop consensus BIO policies and draft position papers

· Develop and facilitate approval of written BIO responses to the docket and to Congress, and verbally communicate BIO positions to relevant government officials

· Direct BIO's internal and external messaging on various climate policy issues

· Evaluate new policies and guidance documents of importance to BIO's agriculture and environment companies and disseminate relevant information to other BIO staff and to member companies

· Engage with key external stakeholders, including other trade associations, coalitions, think tanks, advocacy organizations, scientific and professional societies, and public-private partnerships, on climate policy issues.

· Inform policy development related to other climate policy issues, as assigned. Such issues may include, biobased manufacturing, the bioeconomy, sustainability and ESG disclosures.

· Report regularly at internal meetings of BIO, including, as required, the BIO Agriculture and Environment Section Governing Board

· Become familiar with the work of the Agriculture & Environment Section as a whole and with BIO's overall priorities and help to ensure that policy work is well-integrated with other activities at BIO

· Fulfill other duties and projects as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

· Excellent communications skills, including writing and speaking skills

· Background in public policy and advocacy, specifically climate or sustainability

· Ability to develop and maintain relationships with public and private allied groups with common interests

· Excellent research skills, including problem-solving ability and attention to detail

· Ability to interact appropriately with senior-level executives and high-ranking public officials

· Ability to multitask on various issues and projects

· Ability to work as part of a team and independently

Education and Experience Required:

· 7-10 years related experience (for example, work in policy development for a biotech company, trade association, legislative office, or regulatory agency)
