Job Description

About the role:

Exciting opportunity to join Takeda's active and growing Environmental Sustainability Team as we develop and implement effective strategies to minimize our environmental footprint while supporting our mission to develop and deliver life-saving medications to patients

• Newly-created and highly visible role responsible for leading the development and implementation of Takeda's strategy to reduce environmental impacts associated with Takeda's value chain, including driving Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to net-zero before 2040

?

• Lead cross-functional team in determining and executing priorities for company action, supplier engagement, and Scope 3 emissions measurement and accounting to achieve GHG reduction targets

• Collaborate with industry peers and other global partners to improve Scope 3 global data transparency and accelerate the development of Scope 3 emissions accounting protocols for the pharma industry

How you will contribute:

• Support the Global Head of Environmental Sustainability (ES) in determining and executing Takeda's ES Strategy with primary responsibility for Scope 3 emissions
• Lead cross-functional project team(s) in the development of a Scope 3 strategy and associated net-zero road map. Includes the development of program objectives, charters, project plans, goals, communications, tools, etc.
• Work with key stakeholders (e.g., Procurement, Logistics, Legal, Finance, HR) and within Takeda's business structure to drive progress toward ES goals
• Proactively identifies, addresses and resolves project challenges, keeping leadership informed of critical considerations
• Assists key Takeda business partners and suppliers in implementing effective strategies to incorporate ES considerations in applicable processes to achieve GHG emissions reductions and other ES goals.
• Maintains strategic alignment between various stakeholders to ensure progress toward ES goals while supporting business functions
• Maintains high performance and morale of team/function through effective leadership of direct reports and collaboration with key business partners
• Ensures the development and continuous improvement of data and reporting systems needed to support goal accomplishment including meeting external reporting and assurance requirements
• Other duties as assigned

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

• Proven history as a successful environmental sustainability change agent within a similar business/industry
• Ability to effectively lead, influence, and motivate multi-functional teams
• Demonstrable experience and subject matter expertise in Scope 3 GHG emissions reduction strategies, measurement and reporting
• Familiarity with life cycle assessment (LCA) concepts and life cycle thinking and understanding of its application to Scope 3 emissions
• A demonstrated understanding of environmental sustainability standards and guidelines - particularly as related to climate change, water stewardship and waste management/minimization accounting and reporting
• Demonstrated experience with managing and complex projects and driving change across a business using indirect resources
• Understanding of procurement systems and processes, supplier engagement practices and value chain sustainability challenges
• Proven ability to build support for significant business changes through the development of strategic business partnerships
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence key stakeholders, present to executive teams, and provide training support

• Ability to actively listen, build/maintain effective working relationships with internal/external colleagues/resources, and resolve conflict.

Innovation

• Support Global Head of Environmental Sustainability to maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant value chain sustainability ideas and best practices. Share knowledge of current and emerging sustainability requirements and develop processes to monitor new developments, requirements and promising innovations
• Willingness to embrace data/digital, machine learning, artificial intelligence and automation to continuously improve processes

Complexity

• Ability to identify and prioritize the main activities within the annual plan but also to react immediately to those unplanned issues requiring response (ex. reputation or compliance issues).
• Ability to work independently, meet requirements and deadlines from multiple stakeholders, and execute tasks strategically in a fast-paced environment.

What you bring to Takeda:

• Bachelor's degree in scientific fields such as Environmental, Sustainability, Chemistry, or Engineering is preferred.
• 5 - 7 years of relevant environmental sustainability, supply chain and/or product life cycle experience, or equivalent consulting experience
• 5 plus years of environmental sustainability experience in a site and/or corporate role in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry or industry of similar complexity and structure
• Subject matter expertise in improving value chain environmental sustainability, including experience with influencing supplier behavior to drive reductions in scope 3 GHG emissions
• Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to find solutions to challenges
• Experience in the pharmaceutical, healthcare or related industries and corporate level sustainability/ESG experience is desired

Important Considerations

At Takeda, our patients rely on us to deliver quality products. As a result, we must follow strict rules in our manufacturing facilities to ensure we are not endangering the quality of the product. In this role, you may:

• Work in a controlled environment requiring special gowning and wearing protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body. This may include additional hearing protection for loud areas.
• Need to remove all make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish and/or artificial fingernails while in the manufacturing environment.
• Work in a cold, wet environment.
• Work multiple shifts, including weekends, or be asked to work supplemental hours, as necessary.
• Work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, buffers and Celite that may require respiratory protection.
