Job Title: Director of Environmental Health & Safety

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Executive Director of Facilities

Position Overview:

The Director is responsible for providing leadership and direction in the planning, development, budgetary, implementation, and evaluation of the College-wide Environmental Health and Safety management system.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 9:00am to 5:00pm, accessible 24/7 as needed during peak season and emergencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees all aspects of Environmental Health and Safety for the campus by directly managing the development, implementation and evaluation of various projects and initiatives to provide a safe and secure environment for the entire college community.
  • Manage, plan, schedule, and assume the overall responsibility for EH&S -related inspections throughout the College, including labs and offices, for the purpose of detecting and appraising unsafe conditions or activities.
  • Responsible for ensuring the college is in full compliance with all private and public agencies, local, state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate college-wide training and ensures appropriate steps are taken to ensure campus-wide regulatory compliance.
  • Perform accident/incident investigations, and work closely with Security and Human Resources. Prepare required reports for the stake holders.
  • Develop and maintain EH&S documentation, recordkeeping, and databases.
  • Liaise with various departments, and external vendors and agencies on campus initiatives, including Capital Projects Works as liaison with Capital Projects team and contractors performing renovation and construction activities on campus.
  • Provide and maintain SDS information for educational and administrative departments.
  • Responsible for managing the Fire Safety Program by coordinating and overseeing FLSD and certification programs (Facilities and Security personnel) including fire drills, inspection of logbooks and suppression equipment, and ensuring operations comply with fire department code, submit reports in accordance with current requirements in conjunction with designated Fire Safety consultant.
  • Manage COVID-19 related safety requirements & trainings, create social distancing plans and protocols.
  • Monitor and maintain campus wide chemical inventories. Provide and file Tier II and NYC RTK chemical inventories.
  • Coordinate with Director of Facilities and cleaning service provider to ensure optimal cleaning is provided on a consistent basis including cleaning methods and requirements, proper use and safe application of these products.
  • Responsible for pest control management through third party vendor campus wide while implementing best practices.
  • Provide on-site emergency incident response protocols.
  • Manage the college wide trash and recycling program and carting contract.
  • Participate in safety and emergency planning, testing and implementation as member of the Emergency Management Committee (EMC).
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and best practice of environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Along with the Executive Director interview potential vendors, inspect and approve work and payment of invoices for these projects.
  • Performs special projects as assigned by the Executive Director of Facilities.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related scientific, management, or health and safety field such as environmental health, industrial hygiene, or safety engineering required. Environmental Health and Safety, Certifications (Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) are a plus.
  • Strong knowledge in local, state, and federal environmental and occupational regulations relating to school facilities.
  • Minimum of 3 to 7 years of supervisory or progressive experience in the management of comprehensive environmental health and safety programs at a comparable organization
  • Ability to effectively work with different applicable departments, work well with a diverse community and demonstrate experience effectively leading the organization.
  • Knowledge in all state, federal and local regulations, NYC Department of Buildings, FDNY, Department of Health Regulations, asbestos, hazardous materials, radon, lead, noise pollution, indoor air quality, recycling, PCB's, OSHA, ADA, solid waste, emergency disaster planning, and laws and regulations relating to school facilities.
  • Must be willing to move, travel and perform inspections at various campus locations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Must be able to compose clear and concise written communications. Must be able to verbally communicate with a wide range of people in a clear and concise manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials.
  • Work is routinely performed in office environments, with occasional exposure to both an internal and external environmental including inclement weather and varying temperatures.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus
  • May be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
