South Warner Mountains Wilderness Backcountry Trail Team Expected Dates August 8, 2022 to August 22, 2022 Site Modoc National Forest Position ID PO-00731226 Do you want to spend your summer backpacking and camping in the wilderness of Northern California? The Student Conservation Association (www.TheSCA.org) is looking for four people to complete backcountry trail work in the South Warner Wilderness. This 70,000 acre wilderness is located on the Modoc Plateau is a nexus between the basin and range ecosystems. The elevation varies from 2,000 to nearly 10,000ft forming an ecotone that is home to communities of plants and animals commonly found in low elevation desert plants, sage shrub, as well as the white pine and lodgepole pine forest communities of the Cascades and high Sierras. Member Benefits: + $300 - weekly living allowance + $650 - one time round trip travel allowance, i.e. $325 each way + AmeriCorps eligible (450 hour award, $1,612.43 education award) + Wilderness First Aid Certification + Crosscut Saw Certification Project Description: Approximately 6miles of Owl Creek Trail was damaged during storm and flood events. The crew will be performing technical rock work to reconstruct low-water stream crossings, saw work to remove dozens of downed trees, drainage installation, and general trail repairs with hand tools. Crew Living Accommodations  Field-life is rugged, and while on work hitches (up to 10 days), members should expect to live without electricity, running water, and cell phone reception. On off days the crew will be camping in a front country setting with access to a USFS bunkhouse, including electricity and running water. Cell phone service may or may not be present. Member Responsibilities + Complete project tasks as assigned; whether it is trimming back brush from the trail, working with your team to move a large rock, or doing dishes. Full engagement is expected in all work projects and community activities. + Assist the Project Leader with meal planning, developing emergency response plans, and completing logistical tasks. + Recording work totals and creating reports for agency partners. + Interfacing with general public and partner organizations in a manner that reflects positively upon the crew, organization, and agency.
