Are you passionate about collaboration with multidisciplinary project teams working in rivers, streams, wetlands, and floodplains? Then this role is for you.

Herrera seeks a Scientist with 10 or more years of professional experience and expertise in project management, field study and design of projects in rivers, streams, wetlands and floodplains. The geographic base location of this position can be in one of our Washington or Oregon offices. The candidate will support a variety of ecological restoration, flood risk reduction, and infrastructure development projects for public, tribal and private clients throughout the Pacific Northwest in collaboration with multidisciplinary internal and client project teams. As an Environmental Scientist, you will step into a new role on our Natural Resources Team within the Restoration Practice Area. This position is open to location in Seattle, WA, Bellingham, WA or Portland, OR.

You will be responsible for:

• Providing field work, data collection, and reporting to support wetland, riparian, instream, and floodplain habitat restoration and enhancement planning, design, and monitoring projects
• Lead wetland and critical area delineations
• Lead vegetation and habitat surveys
• Support creation of federal, state, and local permitting application packages
• Support the design of fish passage improvement projects
• Lead Best Available Science documentation
• Support for ESA Section 7 consultations
• Lead and support development of Habitat Conservation Plans
• Support for other engineering and water resource protection projects

Required education and qualifications:

• A bachelor's degree in environmental studies, ecology, biology or other natural science, or a master's degree in a natural science field if undergraduate degree was not in environmental studies, biology or a natural science.
• Experience as project manager of natural resource restoration or planning projects
• Familiarity with coastal and inland Pacific Northwest ecosystems with a core strength in native and invasive vegetation identification, fisheries biology, hydrology, geomorphology, or other applicable technical discipline.
• Permit application experience (e.g., Washington State HPA, federal Clean Water Act Section 404, and local agency permits for grading, erosion control, etc.)
• A current driver's license

• Detail oriented when dealing with data - Experience with field data collection and related equipment, including GPS equipment
• Writer and Communicator - Ability to convey scientific information for a variety of audiences
• Drive - Experience with business development or growing a natural resource-based group

Desired experience-based skills or licensure:

• Professional Wetland Scientist certification or ability to obtain certification through the Society of Wetland Scientists within 1 year
• Professional Hydrologist certification
• Experience with Endangered Species Act consultations
• Education and training in Pacific Northwest fishery sciences
• Other specific trainings and professional organization affiliations should be noted in the applicant's résumé and/or cover letter
