Job Description
Full-time career opportunity for an EHS professional. This Environmental Health and Safety Director provides strategic direction and leadership, is a key member of the Finance/Admin team, and requires sound judgment, tact, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Provide strategic Environmental Health and Safety direction and leadership. Responsible for the development, implementation, and management of all programs related to environmental health and safety.
  • Lead the EHS program, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local laws/codes and working closely with all departments and offices to ensure that they are meeting regulatory requirements.
  • Continue to improve the safety culture through processes, training, and accountability.
  • Develop, analyze, and report out on EHS metrics to Leadership on all continuous improvement of EHS activities.
  • Identify, define and carry out mandatory EHS training library and all associated training processes. This role ensures staff is complying with all required training and ensures all mandatory training content is comprehensive and tracked through completion.
  • Manage the EHS Audit program and report all findings to Leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable environmental and occupational health regulations. Responsible for submitting EHS regulatory permits and reports maintaining compliance with OSHA, EPA, state, and local EHS record-keeping and reporting requirements.
  • Be an integral member of the Crisis Response Team and leads the internal hazmat team and EMS team. Oversee hazardous waste, wastewater, air emissions, asbestos, and workers' compensation programs. Serve as Radiation Safety Officer and Biosafety Officer. Act as liaison to external regulatory agencies for any environmental health and safety areas.
  • Lead team to conduct investigations and root cause analysis to improve and eliminate EHS hazards. Leads in crisis and incident response situations.
  • Monitor the regulatory arena for new or changing regulations and rulemaking.
  • Implement EHS training programs for employees and contractors involved with hazardous materials and equipment.
  • Be on-site managing emergency services during times of building and/or community-wide critical incidents and emergencies that impact us.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
  • Good customer service skills and follow-through on issues.
  • Must be self-motivated, well organized, have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, at all levels of the organization and with external contacts; must be proficient with MS Office technologies including Excel and PowerPoint, as well as internet and email tools.
  • Masters or Ph.D. degree in Science, EHS, or related field. 10-15 years' experience in directing/managing EHS and programs in a multi-facility environment at a corporate, education, or industrial setting with at least 5 years in a university or research environment.
  • Additional experience includes:
  • Communicating with multiple business units, issuing directives and standards, acting as a consultant to other units or projects, making recommendations, and advising senior management.
  • Knowledge in biosafety, chemical safety, radiation/laser safety, hazardous waste, risk management, workers' compensation, ergonomics, lab safety, and industrial hygiene.
  • Managing business operations including budgeting, purchasing, vendor management, and inventory control.
  • Project Management.
  • Preparing scopes of work, bid processes, and service agreements.
  • Preparing and managing an EHS Program manual, policies, and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Using computer-based systems and software.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 training, or similar and advanced training and certifications in EHS standards and best practicbes is desired.
  • Must have a proven commitment to the Environmental Health & Safety profession and be able to demonstrate this commitment through involvement in professional organizations and on-going education.
