Job Description
Position - Marine Ecology Technician

Versar's Natural Resources Team Columbia has an immediate opening for a full-time scientist, with 2-5 years of related experience, to assist the company with marine/estuarine monitoring and assessment programs. Tasks will include benthic sampling, oyster monitoring, water quality sampling, and related tasks. The selected team member will also assist with freshwater and terrestrial monitoring, as well as lab work, field equipment management, report writing, and data compilation and quality control.

The successful applicant will be part of the Versar team that meets clients' needs related to the following tasks:

o Benthic sampling and on-board processing

o Benthic macroinvertebrate sorting and lab prep

o Marine/Estuarine sediment processing

o Storm runoff monitoring

o Illicit discharge detection and elimination

Experience operating vessel up to 25-feet in the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries, near-shore ocean locations, and similar waterbodies IS REQUIRED. Experience or Familiarity With the Following is Desired:

o Use of GPS and software to locate, record, and sample specific locations

o Benthic sediment sampling equipment and protocols

o Calibration/maintenance of water quality equipment (YSI, Hydrolab, In-Situ)

o Microsoft Office applications including MS Access

This position will require occasional availability to work evening and overnight hours, and weekends, as project requirements warrant. Length of shift (hours per) will vary and occasional long days will be required. The ability and flexibility to work with a variety of staff, projects, and task timelines is critical to this position.

Good physical health, the ability to work on site in all types of weather conditions, and the ability to lift 30 pounds in order to perform field tasks is required. A valid driver's license and dependable transportation is also required.
