Job DescriptionVersar's Natural Resources team in the Columbia, Maryland Office has an immediate opening for a part-time entry-level Environmental Scientist to assist the company in meeting clients' needs associated with watershed and estuarine monitoring and assessment programs. Tasks will primarily relate to long-term freshwater stream monitoring, on-site storm monitoring, plus potentially other fieldwork, lab work, field equipment management, writing assignments, data compilation, and data quality control.
The successful applicant will be part of the Versar team that meets State and County clients' needs related to the following tasks:
  • Geomorphological, biological, and water chemistry stream assessments
  • Storm runoff monitoring
  • Illicit discharge detection and elimination
  • Benthic sampling and physical habitat assessment

Experience or familiarity with the following is desired:
  • Continuous flow rate, rainfall, and water quality parameters logging
  • Manual and automated storm sampling using ISCO and other equipment
  • Biological monitoring using Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) methods
  • Microsoft Office applications (intermediate)
  • Programming in R (basic to intermediate skills)
  • Statistical Analysis (basic)
  • Flowlink, HOBOware, and In-situ instrumentation software

Requirements:

BS degree in in an environmental science field

The position will require occasional availability to work in the field for periods in the evening hours, and weekends, as weather conditions and project needs warrant. The ability and flexibility to work with a variety of staff, projects, field conditions, and task timelines is critical to this position.

Good physical health, the ability to work on-site in all types of weather conditions, and the ability to lift 30 pounds to perform field tasks is required. A valid driver's license and dependable transportation is also required.
