A postdoctoral position is available in the Kerlin Research Laboratory (Dr. Bryce Kerlin) within the Center for Clinical and Translational Research of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. This project will focus on discovering biomarkers and molecular mechanisms underlying the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in children. Individuals with experience in or willingness to learn coagulation and vascular biology, coagulation signaling, biomarker discovery, proteomics, metabolomics, systems biology, and expertise in molecular and cellular biology and who are interested in working with an interdisciplinary group to drive discovery are encouraged to apply.

The work will center on the use of animal models of catheter-associated venous thromboembolism complemented by systems biology analyses. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) complicates >1% of all pediatric hospitalizations and leads to significant morbidity and mortality. The Kerlin Laboratory has been working on an improved understanding of VTE mechanisms and risk factors in kidney disease, a leading cause of pediatric VTE. However, the vast majority of pediatric VTE is associated with the use of central venous catheters that are needed to provide supportive care to sick children. We plan to leverage our experience with kidney disease-related VTE biology to this new frontier. Thus, the long-term goal of our research is to reveal key molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying catheter-associated VTE through simultaneous VTE-risk biomarker discovery.

Post-Doctoral Scientists work under the mentorship of an established Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI) Principal Investigator to design and conduct experiments in a specific area of research. From the results of studies, helps to develop hypotheses for further investigation. Prepares technical materials such as abstracts, annual reports, scientific manuscripts, and presentations. Publishes manuscripts in appropriate refereed journals. Works toward a goal of becoming independent in his/her research effort, and eventually obtaining external research funding. Appointment as a Post Doc is a maximum of 5 years in length.

Duties:
  • With guidance from an AWRI Principal Investigator, design and conduct experiments to test specific hypotheses in a specific area of research
  • Helps to train and supervise technical support staff in performing specific techniques essential to carrying out the research program.
  • Records and analyzes data generated by the research study and helps to plan future research endeavors.
  • Prepares scientific and technical papers from the results of the research work. Publishes papers in appropriate refereed scientific journals. Presents findings at local (particularly AWRI research meetings) and (inter)national research forums.
  • If appropriate, collaborates with other ongoing research efforts either at AWRI or at The Ohio State University.
  • This is considered a training position therefore the PI will allow a trainee up to 5 years to advance beyond the level of Post Doc.
  • Works toward research independence.
  • Prepares to submit proposals to and obtain funding from external granting agencies.


Qualifications:
  • MD, MD/PhD, or PhD or equivalent degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline Preferred Experience:
  • Necessary technical skills in the appropriate area of research.
  • Ability to do technical writing, and good communication skills.
