We are looking for top talent to help drive our company towards success. Come join this great team and make a difference!

Company Overview:

The complex ecosystem of bacteria that comprises our microbiome is inextricably linked to human health. Federation Bio is a biotechnology company leveraging the power of bacteria as a chassis and is positioned at the intersection of microbiology, chemistry, and genomics. The company's first-in-class platform combines the power of genetic engineering and synthetic consortium design to control systemic immune responses and broad metabolic functions. Federation Bio's pipeline addresses a range of serious illnesses from metabolic disorders to metastatic cancer.

Description of Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to play a key role on our microbiology team, thoughtfully progressing our discovery portfolio through rapid identification of lead candidates and initiation of IND enabling studies and early clinical development. In this role, the scientist will lead microbial strain characterization efforts for Federation Bio programs in oncology and metabolic disorders.

A successful candidate is required to have experience with anaerobic microbiology, have knowledge of culturomics techniques to isolate novel microbes, and be capable of developing molecular, biochemical, and cell-based assays to characterize a library of strains. This position also requires the ability to lead projects to produce cell banks for both in vitro and in vivo experiments as well as to work cross functionally to provide microbial biomass across a variety of workstreams. The role will require meticulous planning, organization, and scientific rigor. You will play a critical role in the design and development of microbiome therapeutics at the absolute forefront of the field.

This is an in-person position and located in South San Francisco, CA.

Core responsibilities and opportunities are:
  • Coordinate and communicate with microbiologists and immunologists to lead the development of molecular, biochemical and cell-based assays to characterize human gut commensals.
  • Isolate novel human commensal strains from complex samples using culturomics techniques.
  • Lead efforts to produce cell banks for in vitro and in vivo experiments across multiple programs.
  • Collect, organize, and present scientific data to the research and management teams.
  • Effectively communicate with cross-functional teams to ensure optimal information and material sharing.
  • Work rigorously as an individual and passionately as part of a team.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience working with non-model anaerobic microbes using standard anaerobic microbiology techniques.
  • Expertise in aseptic microbiology methods, including experience in strain isolation, culture inoculation, propagation, strain banking, scale up and transfer.
  • Previous experience of performing high-throughput microbial growth assays (preferably using robotics).
  • Experience of preparing microbial strain banks.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques and approaches, including DNA extraction and quantification, PCR/qPCR and primer design.
  • Experience with flow cytometry experimentation and analysis workflows.
  • Keen attention to detail and careful record keeping skills.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills including familiarity with electronic notebook keeping software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

Education and Experience:

Title is based on experience; desired education and experience:
  • Senior Research Associate: at least 6 years of relevant experience a M.S. with at least 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Scientist 1: PhD in microbiology or related discipline, a M.S. with at least 8 years relevant experience, or a B.S. with at least 10 years relevant experience.
