We help the world see new possibilities and inspire change for better tomorrows. Our analytic solutions bridge content, data, and analytics to help business, people, and society become stronger, more resilient, and sustainable.

Job Description

Become a member of the exposures group and join our growing research and model development team at Extreme Event Solutions in Boston. As an engineer in the exposures group, you will work with a collaborative team of engineers, analysts, and economists to transform national census, building surveys, geospatial data, and satellite imagery into detailed models of the built environment for over 100 countries. In this role, you will use a variety of quantitative techniques, tools, and programming languages to build databases that capture the locations and characteristics of the buildings where people live and work. The property databases that you and the team develop will serve as inputs into Extreme Event Solutions catastrophe models and will be used by the modeling teams to predict how much property damage would be caused by simulated catastrophes ranging from hailstorms to earthquakes and estimate corresponding industry losses.

Successful candidates will be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and have strong technical and analytical skills. They will also have excellent research skills and be able to work well independently. It is expected that they will apply their engineering knowledge and work with the team to create and deliver best-in-class property databases to the market.

About The Day-to-Day Responsibilities Of The Role

As a member of the exposures engineering group, you will be primarily responsible for evaluating and assigning the building characteristics to the properties in the databases. Your work will consist of the following:
  • Collect and analyze data on buildings characteristics for buildings around the world to use in assessing the potential vulnerability of the building stock to natural catastrophes
  • Use information obtained from engineering reports and building codes to develop classifications of the building stock by structural type, occupancy, and height
  • Derive regional cost estimates for buildings of varying types throughout the world
  • Employ the use of GIS tools to locate buildings and determine the proximity to natural hazards
  • Develop custom tools and/or applications for use in building classification
  • Create and deliver presentations of analysis methods and results to coworkers and senior management
  • Write technical documentation for internal use and distribution to clients
Provide support to clients
