We are seeking a Research Associate to join the biochemistry and protein engineering team. The successful candidate will work with a scientist to help build DNA constructs for protein expression as well as carry out experiments screening libraries of protein variants. This is a hands-on position that is part of a larger team of biochemists and protein engineers, with an emphasis on benchwork. We want team members with a natural inclination to challenge and work within a culture that is dynamic and self-directed.

Required skills/responsibilities:
  • Works with scientists to develop, optimize, and implement biochemical assays using purified enzymes, lysates, or whole cells.
  • Uses these assays to identify improved variants and characterize their suitability for metabolic pathways.
  • Knowledge of cloning methods including restriction/ligation, Gibson assembly, etc.
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques including RNA/DNA extraction, purification, analysis, and sequencing as well as PCR, qRT-PCR, etc.
  • Familiarity with DNA manipulation software and basic bioinformatic tasks.


Additional but not required skills/responsibilities:
  • Familiarity with automation of high throughput cell culturing and assays.
  • Experience optimizing protein expression.
  • Understanding of enzyme assays and kinetics.
  • Understanding of microbial physiology and fermentation.
  • Biochemical support for strain engineering projects.
  • Experience in the use of enzymes to produce chemicals or other metabolites in whole-cell or cell-free systems.


Required experience:
  • Bachelors within biochemistry, chemical engineering, bioengineering, molecular biology, or a related discipline with 0-4 years related experience.
