Analyze real-world data to make long-term changes in how buildings, and Distributed Energy Resources generate, store and use energy that will mitigate climate change.

TRC delivers advanced energy, decarbonization, and resiliency solutions through program management, research, and advisory services across the United States. TRC's Research and Technology Commercialization (RTC) team (within the Advanced Energy practice) is focused on developing and deploying decarbonization and energy efficiency solutions for our clients - utilities, non-profits, local governments, and state and federal agencies.

The RTC team is seeking a lead research analyst with exceptional analytical skills to support research and consulting on programs, energy codes, decarbonization policy, and emerging technology market adoption. Candidates must have prior experience in at least one of these areas: building systems, building science, energy systems, or distributed energy resources. No project is the same, and you'll get exposure to lots of different types of work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment. Projects will include analysis of energy efficiency, grid responsive buildings, decarbonization, distributed energy resources, human factors, and control systems.Collaborate with our team of engineers, data analysts, and policy makers to conduct research into cutting edge technologies.

Job Location - California (multiple locations).

Job Duties
  • Collect and analyze data on energy technologies
  • Apply your data science and analytics skills to large data sets from various data sources using scripting in R or Python, and other methods
  • Analyze building energy use, greenhouse gas (GHG) impacts, or indoor air quality (IAQ) effects using a variety of methods, including regression analysis and machine learning algorithms and tools
  • Provide technical oversight of other staff members for large data analysis
  • Collaborate with project team members to effectively communicate findings and produce high-quality technical reports suitable for both technical and lay audiences
  • Depending on candidate's skillset and interest: May conduct building energy simulations, conduct field work to deploy metering devices, or analyze market research data
The position will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to:
  • Energy Code Development of energy efficiency and decarbonization policies in local jurisdictions (reach/stretch codes), the State of California, and national model codes
  • Emerging Technologies Research & Tech-to-Market services
  • Market research and evaluations to inform utility programs
  • Other projects with the overall goals of decarbonizing energy systems for a sustainable and equitable future
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in a technical field related to physics, building science, engineering, statistics, architecture, environmental science (or equivalent).
  • 2 to 5 years of experience working in building science (including energy efficiency or decarbonization) and data science or analytics
  • Experience conducting statistical analysis, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis
  • Knowledge of data analysis tools including R and/or Python
  • Ability to manage workload on multiple projects, set priorities, meet deadlines, work both independently and collaboratively, and communicate effectively
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet applications
Desired Skills And Experience
  • Driver's license; position may entail occasional travel
  • Experience with energy metering including measurement and verification (M&V)
  • Advanced M&V analysis and modeling experience
  • Experience with environmental sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) platforms, or other data collection approaches
  • Experience with EV charging infrastructure
  • Experience with demand response or load flexibility analysis, or application of load shapes
  • Knowledge of building energy simulation
  • Familiarity with building energy codes
