MBDC, led by William McDonough, is a leading assessor for the Cradle to Cradle Certification® program. MBDC was founded in 1995 by William McDonough and Michael Braungart, co-authors of the 2002 book Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. MBDC created the Cradle to Cradle Certification® standard for products in 2000. In 2010, the program was transferred to, and is now owned by the independent, third party not-for-profit Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, which maintains the product standard and administers the certification program.

Job Description

  • Learn and understand MBDC's methodology for assessing chemicals and materials and help refine the precautionary process for evaluating materials for consistency and efficiency
  • Evaluate the toxicity level of all chemicals used by MBDC's clients to manufacturer products in multiple categories such as personal care, textiles and apparel, and the built environment
  • Maintain the database used to collect, store and evaluate chemical information used for accessing a product's chemical formula to 100 ppm
  • Research and update data collection and evaluation process to improve the efficiency of chemical assessment program
  • Conduct manufacturing facility site visits
  • Provide unique and constructive advice to clients regarding the optimization of chemicals, materials and processes used to manufacture their products
  • Have routine access to relevant scientific journals and other data sources needed to inform chemical hazard and exposure assessments
  • Access and manage human and environmental toxicological data and other information for conducting chemical assessments
  • Write detailed assessment reports for submission to the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute for a third-party review and final certification of their product
  • Develop and conduct training seminars and/or presentations of MBDC's assessment methodology to clients including project managers, designers and senior management
  • Undergo training with the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute


Preferred Experience and Skills

  • At least three years of relevant professional experience performing chemical hazard and exposure assessments and/or chemical alternatives assessments
  • At least two years of relevant experience to demonstrate an understanding of applicable chemical legislation and regulations, including REACH, CLP/GHS, RoHS
  • Experience in conducting assessments of exposure to chemicals in materials and products
  • Applied understanding of the principles of toxicology and human and environmental health toxicity data and assessment methodologies
  • Experience working with product manufacturers and material suppliers to collect and evaluate chemical formulation information
  • Have a commitment to and mechanism in place for staying up-to-date with scientific advancements and best practices related to performing chemical hazard and risk assessments
  • Familiarity with the concepts of Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard, Design for Environment, Industrial Ecology and Life Cycle Analysis
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to connect and work virtually
  • Functional knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access
  • Effective use of the internet for research and ability to comprehend scientific literature and extract relevant data from sources
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data into concise summaries and be able to explain technical information for a variety of audiences
  • Comfortable with public speaking and presenting to clients


Required Academic Qualifications

An advanced degree (Masters, PhD preferred) from an accredited college or university in chemistry, toxicology, biology, environmental science, chemical engineering, or a field relevant to conducting material health assessments
