The Research Scientist, Molecular and Cell Biology Group will be responsible for identifying, developing, and performing robust, reproducible cell assays to support new product development as well as supporting Balchem's existing products. The Research Scientist, Molecular and Cell Biology will conduct research and collect scientific data through complex laboratory experiments, techniques, and procedures, provide hands-on compound and analytical testing and will be responsible for maintaining various cell culture lines. Individuals will conduct their work with a high degree of autonomy and are expected to be high-performing and contributing members of the R&D team. This position will have strong relationships with the Commercial, Marketing, and Science organizations across Balchem's business unit network.

* Design, develop, implement, and maintain clear procedures and protocols for the evaluation of new and existing products.
* Investigate, analyze, interpret, and reach conclusions relating to the execution of experiments and development of scientific results.
* Maintain clear documentation, make detailed observations, and prepare scientific reports and presentations to effectively communicate results.
* Participate in experimental research planning and perform independent research and laboratory techniques.
* Maintain cell culture lines and all equipment, reagents, and other inventory related to the cell biology laboratory.
* Conduct research in a team environment, either as a project manager or team member, interfacing with groups both internal and external to Balchem.
* Contribute to research and laboratory techniques outside the cell biology laboratory, as needed.
* Execute projects in a timely manner and effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
* Communicate effectively orally and in the written word.
* Function as a technical resource for the organization to resolve internal or customer-related issues and progress new market opportunities as they arise.
* Build and maintain a team of highly competent, effective, and results-focused individuals.
* Perform other duties as assigned.


* Science degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular biology, or closely related field with a graduate degree preferred
* Bachelor of Science and 5 years' experience, Master of Science plus 2 years' experience, or Ph.D.
* Demonstrate strong working knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology
* Exhibit ability to identify and solve complex scientific problems
* Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate experimental data
* Demonstrate competence with mammalian cell culture, aseptic handling techniques, and current bioanalytical techniques (e.g., Gel electrophoresis, ELISA, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, LC-MS, etc.)
* Ability to design and develop new and complex analytical and bioanalytical assays
* Demonstrate strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to multi-task
* Ability to manage a broad variety of duties and projects with shifting priorities
* Exhibit excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
* Demonstrate comfort with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and statistical analysis software (e.g., MS Office products, Minitab, R, etc.)
* Must be able to work in a laboratory or controlled environment requiring personal protective equipment
* Job pace may be fast and job completion demands may be high
* May be required to manage hazardous or biological wastes in compliance with company procedures & State/Federal/Local hazardous waste regulations. Duties may include identifying, handling, generating, accumulating, storing, and labeling.
* Ensure safety, security, and the environment in all aspects of the daily activities
* Understand the ergonomic relationship between people, equipment, and the working environment.
* Must be able to remain in a stationary position for more than 1-2 hours of the time
* The person in this position needs to regularly move inside and outside labs
* Must be able to bend, squat, stretch, and reach above or below in order to perform in a service function.
* Occasionally move or lift up to 25 pounds
* Occasionally travel and work non-traditional hours as the work demands
