About Andes
Andes empowers microbes to enable positive action against climate change.
Andes is integrated by a multidisciplinary group of nature-loving, hardworking people. Driven by purpose and through team efforts, we believe we can achieve bigger and better things. We use and develop cutting-edge technology and embrace bold, out-of-the-box ideas.

We are seeking a motivated, outstanding, and dynamic senior biogeochemist to join our team to work in our unique carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology.

The senior biogeochemist will investigate biogeochemical processes related to Andes CDR technology. Candidates with expertise in soil carbon sequestration, plant-microbe-mineral interactions, mineral surface dynamics, nutrient cycling through managed and natural systems, and/or emission of greenhouse gases are especially encouraged. We are particularly interested in candidates who combine empirical studies with modeling approaches to understand and predict controlling factors in biomineralization, inorganic carbon buildup and the overall carbon content in the soil. A biogeochemist with experience with computational modeling would augment existing research expertise for Andes's growing soil team.
The qualified individual will help build out a team of soil and environmental scientists and research associates. This individual will also be responsible for experimental data analysis and interpretation and will be part of a multidisciplinary team that works on modeling the Andes CDR process.
Location: Emeryville, CA

Responsibilities

* Work closely with the CTO, engineers and scientists to design and execute experimental programs.
* Responsible for the study of soil compositions and the different stages of transformations that soil goes through when Andes CDR technology is applied.
* Co-responsible (altogether with the Senior Soil Scientist) for the experimental design and execution of laboratory and greenhouse experiments to better understand how different chemical and physical factors affect biomineralization processes.
* Responsible for building a model to predict Andes CDR outcomes.
* Research or study soil characteristics, map and model different types of soils suitable to Andes CDR technology in new regions.
* Investigate responses of Andes CDR to specific soil types and soil management practices (e.g., fertilization, crop rotation and irrigation).
* Prepare documented proposals and successfully establish research trials.
* Meet the company requirements for trial planning and operation of research projects.
* Manage trial establishment and collection of data.
* Budget for research work and provide management reporting regarding trial/research progress.
* Write research reports and prepare technical presentations.
* Track relevant IP, literature & technological developments in the scientific literature and give presentations as needed.
* Write patents and scientific papers.
* Review SOPs written by the scientists and RAs; ensure adherence to SOP standards.
* Conduct all work in strict compliance with all applicable safety requirements, containment requirements, standard operating practices, and/or guidelines.

Qualifications and Experience

* PhD, degree in biogeochemistry, chemistry, earth science, soil science or environmental science with a minimum of 6 years of industrial or academic experience.
* Familiarity with soil carbon measurement and terrestrial biogeochemical models with strong data analysis skills is preferred.
* Familiarity working with different kinds of soils.
* Strong team experience and capabilities to work with a variety of backgrounds, including software engineers, scientists, and business teams.
* Adaptable and flexible in priority and time management.
* Ability to manage people and build teams.
* Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and reliable team player.
* Passionate about nature and have a sense of urgency for acting quickly to protect our planet.

Applicant must be authorized to work in the U.S.

What we offer
