Job Description:

A-T-S is looking for a full-time Mid-level or Senior Botanist to join our collaborative team. This position will support biological and construction monitoring projects throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The full-time position includes both office work, which can be done remotely or at our San Francisco based office, and field work, which would require travelling to various sites based on the client's request. The primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducting botanical surveys, protocol-level rare plant surveys, special-status plants, non-native invasive plant mapping and management, habitat assessments and vegetation classifications, including wetland delineations
  • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing field data to be used in the preparation of reports and presentations
  • Drafting reports and assisting in the development of written deliverables related to project work
  • Review and maintain knowledge of relevant project permitting and regulatory requirements, best practices, and local special-status species

Other responsibilities may include:
  • Pre-construction surveys and environmental compliance construction monitoring in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and other specific conditions and policies
  • Provide contractor crews with on-site environmental awareness training prior to work activities
  • Complete daily health and safety forms and online survey/monitoring reports
  • Communicate directly with project personnel to coordinate field work, as needed
  • May require working long field days outdoors, sometimes under rigorous conditions (e.g., hot and/or rainy weather, remote areas, in a variety of habitats)

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Botany, Ecology, or other closely related field
  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience with botanical field work, identifying California native plants and non-native invasive plants, and performing habitat assessments
  • Proficiency with using dichotomous keys such as The Jepson Manual, and familiarity with the local flora of the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Knowledge of tools and local field guides used to identify regional and local plants
  • Familiarity with performing desktop review for rare plants and protocol level floristic plant surveys
  • Experience with field data collection, including the use of ESRI Collector to collect field data, data management procedures, and preparation of technical documents
  • Strong attention to detail, good time-management skills, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Ability to interact effectively with clients and regulatory agencies in a professional manner
  • A commitment to health and safety, as well as environmental protection
  • Ability to work safely in remote areas and active work sites in inclement weather and rough terrain
  • Willingness and availability to travel occasionally
  • COVID vaccine required for all projects with the City of San Francisco and Caltrans

Preferred (but not required) Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Botany, Ecology, or other closely related field
  • Wetland delineation certification
  • Proficient Geographic Information System (GIS), cartography and spatial analysis skills
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations pertaining to botanical field work, including policies and procedures for scientific collection and vouchering
