The Westchester County Department of Laboratories and Research (L&R), located in Valhalla, NY, has an immediate opening for an Environmental Chemist (Organic). Under supervision of a higher level professional, this position is responsible for conducting various environmental organic chemical and physical analysis of water, wastewater, soil and other environmental samples. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for planning and coordinating the work of subordinate laboratory personnel performing these examinations to insure that all tests adhere to established quality control standards of proficiency and must maintain a satisfactory rating of performance for those procedures for which approval has been granted to the laboratory by the NYS Department of Health.

The selected candidate performs and interprets complex organic environmental chemistry analyses of drinking water supplies, natural and treated waters, wastewaters and estuarine waters for pesticides, herbicides, P.C.B.'s, halogenated organics and other toxic and priority pollutants using approved methods; Liquid/liquid, solid phase extraction (SPE), Soxhlet, and Ultrasonic extraction, separation and cleanup procedures using Florisil, Gel Permeation Cleanup (GPC) and others are utilized to isolate target analytes and achieve detection sensitivity; Performs statistical analyses (e.g., linear regression, relative standard error) in order to evaluate an instrument's calibration status as well as analyses on quality assurance and proficiency testing reference samples as required by current guidelines; and other related work as required.

Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a Biological Science, which must have included 20 credits in chemistry, and 4 years of professional environmental organic chemistry laboratory experience, or related chemistry experience with instrumentation or methodology used in an environmental organic chemistry laboratory, using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer system.


Master's Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field may be substituted for one year of the above required environmental organic chemistry experience.
