Job Description

About the role:

The Systems Biology Senior Scientist will be part of a team focused on bioinformatics and computational biology support of translational pre-clinical data analysis supporting the neuroscience therapeutic area.
The goal is to apply expertise in bioinformatics, genomics, machine learning and computational biology to integrate and analyze pre-clinical and clinical, internal and public molecular profiling ‘omics datasets to support Takeda translational and clinical projects in neuroscience therapeutic area.
To independently design, develop and execute research assignments, contributing to multiple projects, acting as senior scientific consultant or as manager of a smaller, early staged matrix project team.
To drive collaborations with internal groups, external partners, including CROs and academia for data analysis and machine learning.

How you will contribute:

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Support neuroscience clinical science and translational research teams to achieve translational research and clinical objectives using advanced computational biology and bioinformatic approaches.
Generate and evaluate hypotheses for patients' stratification, target validation, drug mechanism, and indication prioritization efforts from big ‘omics data.
Curate and harmonize big ‘omics publicly available resources.
Identify, build, and use bioinformatic pipelines to QC omics data types including genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics to extract novel and biologically meaningful information.
Apply various computational biology methods for translational research, including systems biology, pathway/network analysis, such as, GWAS, pheWAS, PGS, etc.
Interact closely with biologists and clinicians to conduct analyses, data integration and data interpretation.
Interpret preclinical and clinical datasets using appropriate computational and statistical methods.
Create visualizations, interpret high dimensional data and explain results to cross-functional teams.
Schedule and execute tasks to meet deadlines.
Plan and coordinate computational biology activities internally and in partnership with external CROs and academic partners, including complex projects requiring collaboration with multiple members of the team and organizations.
Prepare and present comprehensive scientific reports to a full range of internal and external audiences.
Work collaboratively with data scientists and data engineering groups to enhance our computational infrastructure, user interface, query, and visualization capabilities.
Writes study reports and presents data effectively in all settings and with participants of all levels of the organization.

DIMENSIONS AND ASPECTS

Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of currently assigned research methods
Understands the basics of oligonucleotide synthesis
Demonstrates basic knowledge of science/technology outside specific discipline
Recognizes problems and considers the significance of irregularities

Technical/Functional (Line) Expertise

Solid background in genetics and genomics with an understanding of neurological disorders, and ability to interpret genetic and genomic findings in disease context.
Strong background with high dimensional data analysis derived from Next Generation Sequencing, including: RNASeq, DNASeq, epigenetics, and single cell sequencing.
Solid hands-on experience with GWAS/PheWAS/eQTL/pQTL analyses, WES/WGS sequencing data analyses, and rare variants analyses required.
Experience in using pathway-based approaches, multivariate analyses, polygenic risk score analyses, machine learning
Hands on experience in using public big ‘omic human databases
Knowledge of and experience with bioinformatic techniques.
Hands-on experience developing and implementing bioinformatic pipelines for data analysis of RNASeq, DNASeq, proteomic and longitudinal phenotypic data.
Solid knowledge of Unix/Linux, command line interfaces, and fluency in some common scripting and/or programming language (e.g., R, Python, Perl, Java, C / C++).
Familiarity with parallel computing, relational databases (e.g., SQL) and cloud computing or distributed computing (i.e., AWS).
Theoretical knowledge of bioinformatics, computational biology; keeps current with emerging trends in bioinformatics and computational biology.
Familiarity with popular public domain data sources and programmatic interfaces.
Experience in designing and conducting computational biology activities to meet program objectives; able to provide input on timelines and resource needs as indicated.
Able to evaluate/develop computational methods based on project needs.
Excellent problem solving, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Independent, self-starting and supportive of team-based research and able to work effectively in a matrix organization.
Background in/experience with Neuroscience is a plus

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

PhD degree in a scientific discipline, with 3+ years' experience, or
MS with 9+ years' experience, or
BS with 11+ years' experience
Previous industry experience, preferably with big pharmaceutical companies and on clinical programs.
