RES is currently accepting applications for the position of Fisheries Biologist based out of Yreka, CA, or Ashland, OR - our Klamath Field Office.

The mission: be part of an epic project!

RES is leading a massive restoration effort integral to the largest dam removal and river renewal project in US history - a task vital to the future of several imperiled salmon populations on the West Coast. The Klamath River and its tributaries were once home to the third-largest salmon population in the West, but those numbers have crashed to an alarming level. A major ecological restoration project will follow the removal of four aging dams that have cut off access to more than 400 stream miles of historical salmon and steelhead habitat. The world is watching, with major media outlets like the BBC and National Geographic already covering this critical project.

If you want to be part of this truly historic effort, we want to meet you.

This position will report daily to the Klamath Field Office or Lower Klamath Project site. No days are the same, but your activities will be centered around the following:

Fisheries Restoration Support. You will conduct and lead fish capture and relocation, spawning surveys, juvenile occupancy surveys, fish passage evaluations, and habitat assessments. The ability to effectively work together in interdisciplinary teams will be critical.

Monitoring, Surveying and Sampling. You will evaluate habitat conditions, using various GIS based units, and remote sensing data, and perform biological monitoring for in-water construction activities. You will also collect biological samples (e.g., scales, fin clips, otoliths, etc.) and water quality data associated with fisheries. Experience in biological monitoring will make your application stand out, as well as experience operating small unmanned aerial vehicles for data collection purposes.

Data Management and Reporting. You will upload and manage data for various fisheries and water quality tasks. You will also work on monitoring, technical, and annual reports.

Restoration Recommendations. You will analyze obtained field data, public databases, and published literature to make habitat management recommendations to RES management and interagency review teams. You will coordinate with and monitor restoration implementation and maintenance crews to meet performance and restoration goals.

Note that you are expected to do extended field rotations (sometimes 10-12 days at a time), and travel on a regular basis throughout the project sites which may require overnight stays. The work is done in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking, or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions. Some of the work is performed from powered and non-powered boats in lake and river environments so experience in operating them is needed. Additionally, experience with backpack electrofishing units, is a huge plus.

We would love to talk to you if you have many of the following:
  • Bachelor's degree in ecology, biology, limnology, or another aquatic-related discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in fisheries, aquatic ecology, and/or river restoration
  • Technical experience with a combination of the following: fish passage design, dam removal, fish stranding and rescue, fish translocation, barrier assessment, PIT tagging, fish population sampling techniques, eDNA collection, hydrological measurements, stream channel assessment, instream flow studies, river restoration and enhancement, aquatic habitat assessment, and/or water quality monitoring.
  • Experience with identifying anadromous and resident fishes and their habitats common to Northern California and Southern Oregon.
  • Experience with ArcGIS online, and GPS technology.

What will make you stand out?
  • Advanced degree.
  • Experience working on fisheries or aquatic projects in the Klamath River Watershed.
  • Permitting and regulatory compliance experience.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff.
  • Section 10(a)(1)(A) recovery permits and CDFW MOU.
