AS PART OF BIOECONOMY, CLIMATE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY FACULTY CLUSTER HIRE

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY is initiating a faculty cluster in the Bioeconomy, Climate and Renewable Energy. The cluster will enhance SUNY ESF's leadership role in addressing these topics at state, national and international levels. We are hiring five tenure-track positions in two departments: (1) Chemical/Bioresource/Agricultural Engineering in Dept. of Chemical Engineering - (https://www.esf.edu/pbe/), and (2) Natural Resource Economics, (3) Landscape Modeling, (4) Soil Carbon Scientist/Modeler (5) Carbon in the Built Environment, in the Department of Sustainable Resources Management (http://www.esf.edu/fnrm). The successful candidates for these positions are expected to participate actively and sustainably in this interdisciplinary Bioeconomy Cluster initiative, with participation in this Cluster included as an important criterion in performance evaluations.

The bioeconomy is central to the US and global economy's shift from a reliance on fossil fuels to an economy where biological resources and processes are the foundational component and mechanism of solutions to address multiple grand challenges including climate change, food security, energy independence and environmental sustainability. The bioeconomy also is an essential component of New York state's plans to aggressively reduce GHG emissions across its economy as mandated by the state's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act of 2019 (CLCPA). SUNY ESF recently launched two new institutes focused on solving challenges in this space. The Climate and Applied Forest Research Institute (CAFRI) is a transdisciplinary team of forest, energy and climate experts who provide policymakers and the public with science-based and practical solutions to address climate change. The Bioeconomy Research Development Institute (BRDI) focuses on systems analysis and support of bioeconomy development initiatives. Faculty involved in these institutes and other related bioeconomy research are working closely with New York State (NYS) agencies on the development of the plans to implement the CLCPA as well as collaborating with faculty at other universities, research institutions, national labs and companies.

Landscape Simulation Modeler (Dept. of Sustainable Resources Management). Research in landscape simulation is essential to understand the impacts and cost-benefit tradeoffs for the bioeconomy's rapid expansion under a range of future social and ecological scenarios. This person will leverage extensive geospatial data developed by CAFRI and others, using models such as LANDIS-II, Century, DayCent, InVEST, agent-based modeling, etc. Teaching will include (1) two undergraduate courses: Intro to Geospatial Information Technology; and Advanced Topics in GIS, and (2) a graduate course in Advanced GIS or a new course in Cloud-based Geocomputing or Landscape Ecology.

Required Qualifications : PhD in landscape modeling, geospatial analysis, geography or related field .

Preferred Qualifications : Track record of publications in high-impact journals and successful grant writing. Demonstrated capability as a teacher and mentor of both undergraduates and graduate students. Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in research, teaching and service activities.

Application Procedure: Application materials are required to be submitted online at https://www.esf.edu/hr/clusterhire/

Applications should include: (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a 1-2 page statement of research interests and experience (4) a 1- 2 page teaching statement and (5) a 1 page statement addressing how the candidate will contribute to SUNY ESF's Inclusion Diversity and Equity goals.
