SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Responsible for the Environmental Health and Safety Management System (EHSMS) of Merit Medical's facilities globally and direct management responsibility for US sites, including oversight for ISO certifications for 140001 (Environmental Management System) and 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System). This individual will oversee the strategic planning, direction, and facilitation of EHS programs, policies and practices to meet all regulatory and/or contractual requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED
  • Directs and coordinates EHS activities for Merit Medical globally. These activities include EHS program development and implementation; direct global EHS Team meetings; EHS audit compliance oversight including ISO audits; monitoring & management of EHS Team-related issues, communication with business units, senior managers & executive management as appropriate.
  • Formulates and oversees all training, metrics and communications associated with the design, development and implementation of the Merit Medical Environmentally responsible and safe culture.
  • Ensures that the goals of a safe and healthy work environment are actively pursued throughout Merit in an effective and conscientious manner.
  • Drives the operational implementation of EHS strategies and initiatives in a way that builds a Company-wide safety and compliance culture.
  • Leads the development, implementation, communication and continual improvement of Merit Medical's ISO compliance management systems for environmental and occupational health and safety as well as other needed environmental health and safety initiatives.
  • Ensures facility safety and environmental policies and procedures are aligned with safe work practices and governmental laws and regulations.
  • Develops and implements health and safety metrics to ensure proper measurements are executed, tracked, and used to facilitate continuous improvement within Merit Medical.
  • Assesses risk, acts as needed and directs the closure of all insurance related deficiencies together with advising Executive and Senior management regarding options to mitigate current and potential risks.
  • Develops and implements annual EHS compliance audits to ensure Company requirements are being implemented as intended; reports results to Executive Committee.
  • Assesses business unit EHS risks by seeking the consultation and participation of the business unit's workforce and develops and implements appropriate risk mitigation plans.
  • Designs and delivers employee training on the topics of safe work practices, safe equipment use, ergonomics, identification and reporting of hazardous conditions, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintains and promotes a strong safety culture and follows all safety policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies and communicates workplace hazards and corrects or seeks assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Maintains working knowledge and ensures overall compliance pertaining to any/all regulatory agencies including all corporate, local, federal, state and provincial legislation at Merit Medical's facilities worldwide.
  • Hazardous Waste Management - Ensures that all hazardous wastes are managed in accordance with local and applicable country codes. This includes profiling of wastes, proper storage, marking and labeling for hazardous waste and satellite storage, inspections, manifesting and shipping. Additionally, ensures that wastes are shipped to approved sites and training is provided to the appropriate employees as specified in the regulations. Collects data and prepares hazardous waste reports. Manages the cost for hazardous waste disposal.
  • Air Emissions Compliance - Ensures facility permits are current according to site process emissions.
  • Industrial Wastewater Management - Acts as liaison for the facilities and communicates and coordinates all compliance activities with appropriate country regulatory officials. Prepares permits as needed as it pertains to sewer and or storm water discharges. Manages and monitors the activities of the wastewater treatment to ensure compliance. If needed, conducts special studies to determine efficiency and effectiveness. Troubleshoots problems related to maintaining compliance.
  • Accept full authority to take any necessary action to maintain overall safe practices and procedures, including the authority to cease an unsafe operating procedure.
  • Ensure all equipment and buildings owned or operated by the company comply with safety and fire regulations and any other Provincial or Federal regulations.
  • Performs facility audits or observations on equipment and property conditions and reports discrepancies to appropriate managers.
  • Monitors and measures effectiveness of all environmental and safety programs and documentation required as part of compliance with country EHS codes.
  • Develops a team from within each facility to ensure safety and compliance is observed at all levels.
  • Conducts accident investigations as necessary to assist with liability determination and causation, including resolution of open claims.
  • Files requests for accident evaluations, ensuring unpreventable accidents are recorded as such wherever applicable.
  • Performs other duties, as required.
  • Annual travel up to 25%

SUMMARY OF MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, , or related field.
  • A minimum of seven years experience in safety program development/training/planning.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish candidate preferred.
  • Knowledge of human resource management policies and applicable local, state and federal safety regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience with ISO certifications such as ISO 14001 and ISO 45001.
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others.
  • Good training skills and the ability to train employees on various safety and environmental issues.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to complete tasks in a timely manner while meeting deadlines.
  • Demonstrated computer skills such as Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, database, and other applicable software programs.
