Overview:
Perform and develop methods in industrial microbiology involving both Quality Control and Research and Development functions which may include: microbial evaluation of over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceuticals, personal care products, nutritional supplements, and foods; microbiological monitoring of manufacturing environments; and preservative efficacy testing of newly developed products and stability samples.

Responsibilities:
Evaluates raw materials, bulk batches, and finished goods for microbial purity, including pathogen screening and microbial identification.Performs PCPC (CTFA) and USP preservative efficacy testing on new formulas and as part of stability.Conducts microbiological surveys in the areas of plant hygiene, air quality, and sanitation efficacy.Validation of testing methods and equipment for the Micro labs, including writing final reports.Investigate microbial test result excursions.Independently evaluate and summarize data from experiments.Interpret unexpected results or observations and recommend next steps.Maintains the laboratory, equipment, and instruments in conformance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP's).Enter and verify lab data in computer databases and lab notebooks, generate test reports, and communicate results.Prepares media and reagents used in microbiological testing.Ordering supplies for the lab and maintaining expenses within budget.Identify opportunities for increasing lab efficiencies and cost savings.Communicate results both orally and in writing to supervisor, key project members, and higher level management.Independently take action on project activities, work with other functions and sometimes outside vendors.Be able to demonstrate a competency of JD Edwards, MasterControl and others software systems for daily tasks.Be able to independently set up and analyze Design of Experiments (DOE)Help teach less experienced MicrobiologistsAdditional Performs other duties as assigned or needed.Supervision of Others As assigned.

Qualifications:
BS degree in MicrobiologyAt least 2 years of microbiology experience in OTC pharmaceutical, personal care product, or food industries.Knowledge of instrumentation, media preparation, and standard methods of microbiology.Proficient with Microsoft Office.Excellent math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, analyze, etc.).Ability to work independently.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Positive attitude and role model for Micro Lab staff.Ability to work under stress.Standing, sitting or walking for duration of shift.Visually read bottles, product, batch numbers, etc.Ability to organize and coordinate projects.Ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities with efficiency and accuracy.Additional Ability to climb stairs.Ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs.
