Program Officer: Multi-species Conservation Planning

The Conservation Planning Specialist Group (CPSG), of the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC), is searching for a full-time Program Officer to participate in delivering and expanding our conservation planning processes for threatened and endangered species.

CPSG delivers species conservation planning expertise to governments, other SSC Specialist Groups, zoos and aquariums, and other wildlife organizations. Using expert facilitation and science-based planning tools, CPSG conducts multi-stakeholder conservation planning workshops for endangered species, risk assessments using population modeling tools, and strategic planning for conservation organizations.

The successful applicant will join a global staff of six professionals delivering species conservation planning projects around the world. They will contribute to the strategic growth of the organization by helping to create or refine tools and processes for effective multi-species conservation planning across the in situ ex situ population management spectrum.

Duties will include:

  • Developing projects, budgets, and workshop process design and facilitation plans to respond to complex species conservation challenges Conducting multi-stakeholder workshops both in-person and using virtual platforms (Zoom, Teams etc.) Compiling, editing and distributing workshop summaries, reports and written plans

Requirements include:

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in the biological sciences, or an equivalent combination of academic training (e.g., M.Sc.) and practical relevant experience in an appropriate professional setting; Strong proficiency in the use of databases and in the analysis and presentation of information from large datasets; Exceptional social and listening skills; A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and across cultures; Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, including proven ability in writing of reports and scientific papers, grant proposal preparation, and delivery of oral presentations; Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize tasks as necessary; and Availability for domestic and international travel (minimum ~20% time annually).

Desired characteristics include:

  • Experience with the IUCN Red List assessment process and a working knowledge of SIS; Proven expertise in quantitative risk assessment and modeling of wild and/or captive populations; One or more of the following specializations: spatial analysis using GIS, biostatistics and species conservation planning methodology; Skills related to meeting design and facilitation; A working knowledge of a language other than English.
