The State University of New York College of EnvironmentalScience and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY is building afaculty cluster in Water Research to complement existing expertisein this general area as well as in water chemistry, water resourcesmanagement, and aquatic ecology. Here we invite applications for an academic-year (10 month)tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of AquaticMolecular and Cellular Biology. We are especiallyinterested in candidates with a research focus in aquatics tocontribute to supporting freshwater and marine systems in theNortheast and globally through substantial participation in ESF'sinaugural Water cluster hire. We seek a teacher-scholar with astrong commitment to engaging students in the classroom and throughresearch mentorship at the undergraduate, MS and PhD levels. Thesuccessful candidate will be expected to participate in thisinterdisciplinary water cluster as well as build an internationallyrecognized and extramurally funded research program that reliesheavily on molecular approaches. A strong interest in collaborativeresearch with faculty in Environmental Biology and otherdepartments within the College, is expected within the broadermission of the College to advance knowledge and promote stewardshipof both natural and designed environments.

Responsibilities: The workload for thisposition is 45% teaching, 45% research, and 10% service. Specificteaching responsibilities include: 1) an undergraduate course inCell Biology, 2) an upper division undergraduate/graduate levellaboratory course in Molecular Biology Techniques 3) a one creditgraduate level seminar in the candidate's area of expertise, and 4)contribute to a one credit senior synthesis course. Serviceresponsibilities include advising undergraduate students, mentoringgraduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels andparticipating in department, college and community service.

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD in molecular or cellular biology, biochemistry, biology orrelated fields
  • Strong record of publication of aquatics-related research
  • Evidence of potential to secure external funding to supportresearch

Preferred Qualifications:
  • One or more years of postdoctoral experience and a proven trackrecord in either molecular, biochemical, or cellular biologyresearch
  • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring
  • Evidence of strong lab research experience with some fieldresearch experience
  • Evidence of collegiality and dedication to professionalservice
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate science effectively tomultiple constituencies
  • Demonstrated experience fostering an inclusive environment,working with people from diverse backgrounds, and incorporatingdiverse perspectives in research

The College and the Faculty: Thesuccessful candidate will join the Department of EnvironmentalBiology ( department has over 30 faculty, 110 graduate students, and 510undergraduates. Our Biotechnology major has an enrollment of 70 to80 students and draws on faculty in other departments, e.g.,Chemistry. Other EB undergraduate majors include Aquatic andFisheries Science, Conservation Biology, Environmental Biology,Forest Health and Wildlife Science. ESF's more than 25,000 acres offorest properties include the Adirondack Ecological Center( serves as a basecamp for teaching and research in anear-pristine 15,000 acre portion of the Adirondacks. Ourdepartment is home to the Center for Applied Microbiology (,the American Chestnut Research and Restoration Center (,the Center for Integrated Teaching and Research (CIRTAS), theCenter for Native Peoples and the Environment ( the Restoration Science Center ( is also home to the Thousand Islands Biological Station( the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River, Cranberry Lake Biological Stationlocated in the Adirondacks and surrounded by wild forest andwilderness lands.

ESF is a specialized PhD-granting college within the 64-campusSUNY system, and is a Carnegie R2 "High Research Activity"Institution that consistently earns high rankings in US News andWorld Report, Forbes, Princeton Review, and other national collegeguidebooks. With a total enrollment of about 1,700 undergraduatesand 400 graduate students, ESF provides an intimate small-collegeatmosphere while its immediate proximity to Syracuse University andUpstate Medical University fosters a vibrant, diverse,large-university setting.

ESF has an especially strong focus in aquatic sciences with morethan 50 faculty on campus focused on environmental problemsinvolving water. In the past decade alone, ESF has made majorinvestments in new laboratories e.g. Center for Integrated Teachingand Research in Aquatic Sciences, the forest soils laboratory, andthe mass spectroscopy complex in A&TS. These facilities bringoutstanding capabilities to ESF allowing for the recruitment of newhigh quality faculty. Existing faculty in Chemical Engineering andERE are working on new technologies for remediation of waterquality problems such as harmful algal blooms and PFAScontamination. The Clarkson-ESF Center of Excellence in HealthyWaters will interface those efforts with private enterprise. Thisposition is expected to collaborate and expand upon thoseefforts.

Cellular and molecular research facilities on-campus at SUNY-ESFinclude: (1) The Edwin C. Jahn Laboratory for Chemical Research, awell-equipped polymer, environmental, natural products andbiochemical research facility; (2) Analytical and TechnicalServices, with 600 and 800 MHz NMR, high resolution GC-MS, LC-MS,MALDI-TOF/TOF and ICP-MS capabilities; and (3) The Center forUltrastructural Studies with light, atomic force and scanningelectron microscopes. Additional resources at neighboringinstitutions include SUNYMAC (,a molecular core facility at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
