BCI and our Mission

Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, seeks one part-time GIS Analyst to join BCI's Conservation Department. Ideal candidates will be based within reasonable travel distance of major western U.S. cities. The GIS Analyst will work as part of the Habitat Protection & Restoration Program.

Primary Responsibilities and Expectations

The successful candidate will provide geospatial assistance to the entire Habitat Protection and Restoration (HP&R) program. They will be responsible for setting up field staff with the necessary tools to collect geospatial and biological data at project sites, creating a variety of high-quality maps, assisting staff with troubleshooting geospatial hardware & software, querying geospatial data, data analysis, managing several GIS databases, and working with HP&R staff and partners to create new geospatial products and tools using existing available resources and/or the acquisition of new hardware or software (drones, new sensors, etc.). Occasional field work in the western United States will be required to understand existing workflows and/or test and train staff on new workflows. Camping will sometimes be necessary at field sites and gear could be provided upon request for those who do not have or cannot afford camping gear.

Work Schedule

The location of this position is flexible to the western United States with preference to being somewhere close to airport travel access. This is a part-time position that will be remote (work from home) with the exception of occasional field work. A laptop computer will be provided by BCI. Outside of important meetings, the successful candidate will be able to work their hours with a flexible schedule of their choosing during weekdays. Field work will be approximately two to four times a year and will require traveling to project sites and sleeping in or near field locations. Projects are often in remote, mountainous terrain near small communities with limited services. Field sessions typically last five weekdays, including paid travel days, though some projects may last longer and may include working weekends. Travel and fieldwork days range from 8-12 working hours, sometimes more. Overnight lodging will usually be provided in hotel rooms or shared house rentals, with private bedrooms for each team member. Meals, equipment, and travel costs will be reimbursed to federal per diem standards.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Assist with geospatial production work for the restoration, subterranean, compliance, cultural and cliff ecology teams under BCI's conservation program.
  • Create new geospatial products and help build the restoration team's geospatial capacity as the team continues to grow.
  • Support conservation field staff by setting up data collection methods in ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 for ArcGIS.
  • Assist field staff with troubleshooting various geospatial hardware and software.
  • Train staff to access data and use geospatial tools.
  • Create quality map products in ArcGIS Pro for project reports, proposals, communicating conservation objectives and inform planning efforts.
  • Work with field staff to quality control, update, and publish data within the ArcGIS Online environment.
  • Maintain geospatial databases
  • Assist with project reporting and coordination with project partners.
  • Build relationships and work with project partners to attain or send various geospatial data which may include developing storage and viewing capacity for these partners.
  • Research and development work (integrating new technologies into data collection and management such as Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles, custom ArcGIS web applications, etc.).
  • Test new geospatial hardware & software, and/or train field staff in geospatial data collection (in the field and/or remotely)


Required Qualifications:
  • Two years of relevant work experience, a GIS Certificate (from either a university or community college) and/or a Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Studies, Biology, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or other similar degrees.
  • Proficiency in ESRI software products such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Dashboards, Field Maps, and Survey123.
  • Database creation, management, and maintenance experience.
  • Resourceful problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with sensitivity.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Ability to work well within a team environment
  • Ability to engage with diverse partners, audiences, and staff to share, develop, and collaborate on projects.
  • Ability to self-manage multiple projects while keeping track of project deadlines.
  • Occasionally work and hike in remote environments with accompanying gear.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with Cloud Compare software.
  • Experience with LiDAR data
  • Experience in remote sensing data capture and processing from UAVs.
  • Experience collecting scientific data in the field
  • Experience in natural resources, restoration, and/or conservation.
