Program Overview
Through the EU supported Sustainable Use of Peatland and Haze Mitigation in ASEAN (SUPA) Project, WRI Indonesia aims to improve Non-State Actos (NSA) in the ASEAN member states in integrating actions towards sustainable peatland management and reducing fires and haze in the SEA region. In this project, WRI Indonesia seeks to improve management of peatland in priority jurisdictions to reduce GHG emission from peat degradation and fires while promoting equitable land use practices to enhance local livelihoods; the initiative will also be strengthened by promoting the sustainable management of peatlands in the ASEAN region through collective actions and to enhance cooperation to support and sustain local livelihoods, reduce the risk of fire and associated haze and contribute to global environmental management.

One of outcomes is devised to address the challenges in enhancing and mainstreaming knowledge on sustainable peatland management through reliable data utilization, promotion of actionable research, and best practices implementation at local level. This outcome will be achieved through reliable data collection in targeted South East Asia countries. The reliable data collection is obtained through desktop study, series of dialogue with resource persons, expert meeting, research, and field visit. There are two main activities as part of data collection and verification activities:

  • The Conference of Parties (COP) with NSA-scientific communities will be held trough separate virtual meeting with 8 targeted countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao, Vietnam. These virtual COPs will be held in August September 2020. This COP aims to gather think tank, research organizations, academic institutions, peat researchers, in order to influence them to fill research gaps, as demonstrated by the database, and to each agreement on the baseline of peatland management and protection. WRI Indonesia in Jakarta will host a virtual COP with resource persons from Lao in September 2020. The virtual COP will be held for maximum one (1) day or 8 hours.
  • The field visit to verify the peatland-related data on the ground will be held in 2021 in targeted countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Lao, Vietnam. WRI Indonesia is planning to arrange 2 (two) field visit in Lao between January-August 2021. The field visit will be conducted for maximum ten (10) days or 80 hours.

  • WRI Indonesia considers communications as an integral part of the virtual COP and (/or) field visit activity mentioned above. Given the importance of well communication with resource persons from Lao during the virtual COP and (/or) field visit activity, a simultaneous or consecutive interpretation/translation service would be required to ensure a smooth communication process during the virtual COP and (/or) field visit.
