POSITION DETAILS

Hunter College invites applications for a Director of Environmental Health & Safety. In addition to general duties, the Director of Environmental Health & Safety will report to the Vice President for Administration to perform the following duties:

Directs and oversees environmental health and safety programs to maintain compliance with occupational, laboratory, environmental, and other safety standards issued by agencies having regulatory jurisdiction over the campus.

Develops, implements and manages policies, procedures, guidelines, and training to ensure activities are conducted safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Maintains compliance with all OSHA, EPA, NFPA, NRC and New York State and City regulatory agency guidelines.

Oversees and manages all required facility inspections, program audits, and other environmental health and safety-related inspections by regulatory agencies having jurisdiction (NYCDEP, NYSDEC, FDNY, CUNY EHS, etc.).

Ensures all required reporting is submitted to maintain compliance.

Oversees management of the FDNY Lab Inspection Program including processing safety correction notices, communication with pertinent parties to resolve issues, and documentation of corrections.

Establishes environmental health and safety protocols to minimize risks.

Directs and oversees, leading where necessary, chemical hygiene, radiation safety, biosafety, hazardous material safety, occupational health and safety and management programs including development of policies, procedures, guidelines, and training to ensure activities are conducted safely and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Ensures overall compliance with all hazardous waste (chemical, biological and radioactive) handling requirements including sampling and disposal regulations. Ensures proper response to hazardous material releases.

Develops and manages appropriate training programs and communications for faculty, staff, and students.

Directly oversees and is responsible to provide, leading where necessary, safety inspections and risk analysis services for all campus facilities and grounds. To include identification of safety hazards, risk/loss exposure, and abatement/mitigation strategies.

Oversees procurement and/or production of all documents, training manuals, brochures, posters, etc., required for environmental health and safety programs.

Directly responsible for the management of assigned budgets and resources to ensure accurate monitoring, tracking, analysis, and forecasting are conducted to ensure successful performance.

Directly responsible for personnel management and administration including hiring, retention, performance, corrective and/or disciplinary action, and resolution of issues while working closely with the VP of Administration and Hunter College Human Resources.

Responds to environmental health and safety complaints.

Maintains records of, and reports, required information related to environmental health and safety matters.

Attends weekly Vice President for Administration leadership team meetings.

Attends weekly Environmental Health and Safety Officer (EHSO) meetings held by the CUNY central office.

Serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies having jurisdiction as related to environmental health and safety requirements.

Assists with efforts to respond to campus emergencies as related to the assigned area of responsibility including active participation in CUNY EHS and serving in key positions of leadership within the campus structure.

On-call for meetings as needed or by appointment with the VP Administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience is required. An advanced degree in environmental science, risk management, industrial hygiene, chemistry, or related engineering, public or business management discipline is preferred.

Thorough knowledge all city state and federal regulations as they relate to academic institutions.

Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a strong customer service approach to work efforts while motivating staff in a challenging environment.

Demonstrated knowledge of personnel management including interacting effectively with many levels of personnel, providing sound analysis and guidance to supervisory staff, performance management, dispute resolution, and team development.

Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents or regulations and then determine applicability and steps associated with achieving compliance.

Ability to effectively organize and present information, data, ideas and concepts in written or presentation format.

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.

Manages biological, chemical, and radioactive waste disposal programs

Provides for appropriate faculty, staff, and student training programs and communications

Selects and implements techniques for identifying hazards, assessing risks, and conducting investigations

Facilitates faculty and administration participation in projects with environmental health and safety implications

Plans and formulates environmental health and safety policies and coordinates efforts with University-wide programs and policies

Responds to environmental health and safety complaints

Maintains records of, and reports, required information related to environmental health and safety matters

Performs related duties as assigned.
