General Statement of Duties

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health has an opening for an Environmental Health Specialists on the OSWW-Soil and Septic System Evaluator team. The purpose of this job is to protect the public health of the citizens of Forsyth County. This is done through a highly regarded program that regulates onsite wastewater treatment, private water supplies and public swimming pools.

Employees in this position should be comfortable working in all weather conditions and the extremes of each.

Distinguishing Features

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Working knowledge of the design of onsite waste water treatment systems, communicable diseases, swimming pools, vector control, protection of water supplies, solid waste management, and institutional sanitation;

Ability to work through complex problems with minimal supervision.

Working knowledge of inspection methods and investigation techniques as applied in environmental health;

Working knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures as well as a complete understanding of the concepts of public health law;

Ability to analyze and comprehend a wide variety of technical and administrative regulations, records, and reports;

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public;

Ability to develop and express ideas and opinions concisely, comprehensively, and clearly in oral and written form;

Ability to independently plan and schedule work activities;

Ability to apply environmental health knowledge and techniques in the investigation of environmental health problems;

Ability to exercise sound judgment and deal tactfully with a wide range of public contacts while enforcing public health laws and regulations;

Ability to communicate with the public effectively and to speak to large groups of people in an educational setting.

Minimum Education and Experience

Preferred:

Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health from a program accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association, one year of experience in the field of environmental health and has obtained an authorization in at least one of the following: Onsite Wastewater, Wells or Swimming Pools.

Registered as an Environmental Health Specialist (Sanitarian) by the NC State Board of Sanitarian Examiners. Registration must be current.

Must have a valid NC driver's license.

Intern Starting Salary $40,601.47

Accepted:

Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the physical or biological sciences.

Currently authorized in at least one of the following: Onsite Wastewater, Wells or Swimming Pools.

Must have a valid NC driver's license.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

.Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Performs soil/site evaluations to determine suitability for the installation of a new/expansion septic system or a repair of a failing septic systems. Consults with homeowner/applicants to determine the best options.

Designs all wastewater treatment and dispersal systems.

Designs all pump systems.

Issues appropriate permits based on over all site suitability and applicant request.

Performs final installation inspections of wastewater treatment and dispersal systems.

Issues well construction permits after a site visit to determine proper well placement.

Performs a grouting and final well head inspection.

Samples new and existing wells and advises the well owner of the test results.

Performs existing system location inspections for secondary construction and MH placement.

Performs annual permitting inspections of public swimming pools and spas.

Investigates complaints from the public or municipalities; may initiate corrective and/or legal action which could lead to court.

Prepares and maintains related records and reports.

Assist in performing duties with the Integrated Vector Control Program.

Provides information to the public and is continually educating clients regarding policies and regulations that govern the program.

Performs related duties as needed.
