The Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) is focused on developing therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor, stromal and immune biology within the TME with the goal of enhancing responsiveness to checkpoint blockade and targeted therapies. Comprised of scientists across multiple disciplines, we are responsible for the biology and translational science necessary to support drug development from target identification through to first-in-human studies.

This opportunity is for a Scientist level position, who will join the Cancer Biology research team within the Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) in Redwood City, CA, and aid in the advancement of early-stage therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor genetics and immuno-biology. This team is composed experts in tumor-intrinsic biology, functional genomics, and immune-oncology who develop therapies that leverage the interplay between the host and tumor. Our mission is to provide transformative therapeutics to cancer patients that improve response rates and durability to this challenging disease.

Position Responsibilities:

In the role as a Scientist within the TME TRC Cancer Biology Discovery team, the ideal candidate:
  • Is a highly motivated, interactive, and creative individual who possesses the ability to work across a highly matrixed environment to advance preclinical drug development programs from target identification/validation through IND enabling activities.
  • Effectively collaborates with colleagues in the oncology, immuno-oncology, pharmacology, and translational medicine groups, participates on project teams as needed.
  • Designs and executes the next logical steps in a series of related experiments, troubleshoots, and performs data analysis.
  • Learns and improves new techniques/approaches/technologies as the needs during a project evolves.
  • Performs aseptic cell culture, cell line engineering, and basic biochemical and molecular biology assays.
  • Is proficient in utilizing software such as GraphPad Prism, Microsoft Office etc. for data analysis and figure generation.
  • Demonstrates clear and professional verbal and written communication, capable of presenting scientific results to multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders, attention to detail with excellent organizational and record keeping skills.

Experience =

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree
  • 5+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or
  • Masters Degree
  • 3+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or
  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences
  • No experience necessary

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strongly prefer M.S. with 3-5+ years, Ph.D. with 0-1 year or B.S. with 5-8+ years of experience in cancer biology, cellular and molecular biology or related field. Industrial experience and/or scientific knowledge of immunology/immuno-oncology is preferred.
  • Capable of independently designing and executing the next logical steps in a series of related experiments, troubleshooting, and performing data analysis.
  • Capable of learning and improving new techniques/approaches/technologies as the needs during a project evolves.
  • Requires hands on experience with aseptic cell culture, cell line engineering, and basic biochemical and molecular biology assays (eg western blots, PCR, qPCR, cytotoxicity assays).
  • Experience with multi-color flow cytometry, processing of primary human/mouse samples, and primary immune cell functional assays is highly desired.
  • Knowledge of or exposure to assays or assay cascades to identify and optimize drug candidates is a plus.
  • Requires proficiency in utilizing software such as GraphPad Prism, Microsoft Office etc. for data analysis and figure generation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and interact effectively with colleagues is required. Will participate on project teams, as needed.
  • Ability to mentor more junior scientists and colleagues on laboratory techniques and best practices is highly valued.
  • Requires attention to detail with excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • This is a laboratory-based position in Redwood City, CA. There will be less than 10% travel.
