GEI's Huntington Station office on Long Island continues to grow and is seeking a highly motivated Aquatic Ecologist/Lake Management Specialist seller-doer to join our team. Responsibilities will include pursuing and acquiring new clients while maintaining existing clients and performing project work. This individual must be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively with a project team of ecologists, environmental scientists, and engineers. The geographic area of focus for project work is the US Northeast. Occasional travel will be required.

Project management responsibilities include project planning; budget development and tracking; client, subcontractor and agency interaction; oversight of field staff; review and interpretation of data; and preparation of permit application documents, work plans, and reports. The role also includes participating in business development activities including preparing proposals and meeting with existing and prospective clients.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Manage, monitor, and coordinate lake management projects.
  • Develop protocols and conduct ecological investigations including aquatic plant surveys, water quality investigations, and benthic and fisheries surveys.
  • Prepare technical reports and provide recommendations to clients.
  • Prepare and QA/QC technical documents, mentor junior staff, and provide technical in-house training.
  • Identify opportunities and clients including participating in targeted marketing and business development efforts, and networking.
  • Prepare proposals, qualification statements, grant applications, and conduct public presentations.
  • Provide management and oversight of junior staff during implementation of aquatic surveys and ecological projects.
  • Support marine and terrestrial natural resources investigations.
  • Assist wetland ecologists with wetland delineations, obtain formal USACE certification training to independently conduct wetland delineations utilizing USACE Methodology.
  • Conduct GPS surveying and prepare GIS maps.

As Needed Responsibilities and Duties
  • Conduct SEQRA, NEPA, and CEQR inventories and assessments and assist with preparation of documents.
  • Assist with development of ecological restoration and monitoring plans, and construction bid documents.
  • Conduct threatened and endangered species presence/absence surveys, habitat suitability assessments, and ecological community mapping.
  • Assist with preparation of Essential Fish Habitat studies and reports.
  • Cross-sell GEI's other core services (e.g., environmental permitting, water resources, environmental remediation, waterfront design, geotechnical and other engineering services).
  • Complete NYS Stormwater Management Training, obtain certification, conduct NYS SWPPP inspections and assist with preparation of SWPPP documents.

Minimum Qualifications
  • M.S. in Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Planning, or related discipline.
  • Botany, fisheries, and wildlife biology training.
  • Minimum 5+ years professional experience.
  • ArcGIS v.10 program proficiency.
  • NALMS Certified Lake Manager (CLM) a plus.
  • Valid U.S. Driver's license and boating license.
  • Excellent computer skills with technical analysis software, MS Office, MS Project, PowerPoint, ArcGIS, r Studio, and other computer applications.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and public presentation skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel on short-term assignments as needed.
