The Scientific Director, Hematology, Computational Biology in Oncology Translational Research will lead translational data analysis and bioinformatics support for Oncology therapeutic products and candidates. This individual serves as an expert in Computational Biology, skilled at both translating biological questions into tractable in silico analyses and interpretation of results for presentation to a diverse audience of clinicians, bench scientists and senior leadership. This individual will work in conjunction with Translational Research leads to develop biomarker strategies and novel approaches to address DAS-focused disease biology questions through independent in silico research, external collaborations, and clinical study analyses. Computational work will include data integration, analysis, and interpretation of high dimensional data from a variety of platforms including next-generation sequencing, gene expression platforms, flow cytometry, CyTOF, single cell NGS, proteomics, and IHC. He/she will combine oncology disease area experience with data analysis and statistical expertise to characterize disease mechanisms, mode of action for therapeutic interventions, and candidate biomarkers for the Oncology TA. These efforts also include development of research proposals and statements of work to engage with external collaborators and CROs. Effective coordination and communication within Oncology, central Janssen R&D teams and external partners will be required. Critical evaluation of emerging techniques for biomarker discovery and target validation is a critical component of this role. He/she will also collaborate with Data Sciences, Quantitative Sciences, and R&D IT to implement informatics systems and approaches that address the Oncology TA needs.

The Scientific Director will perform real-time bioinformatics and statistical analysis, visualization, and data interpretation for Oncology Disease Area Strongholds (DAS) with an emphasis on hematological malignancies. This individual will use statistical and machine learning methods to identify prognostic and predictive biomarker signatures from high dimensional biological data. He/she will integrate data from external (e.g. NCBI Entrez, NCBI GEO, TCGA/ICGC, dbGaP/EGA, UCSC Genome Browser, Ingenuity) and internal sources, including clinical biomarker data. He/she may also evaluate and develop novel algorithms and approaches for data analysis.

The individual will communicate results to bench scientists, clinicians, and management in an appropriate biological context. He/she will participate in Disease Area Stronghold meetings and proactively support related Bioinformatics and Computational Biology projects. The candidate will maintain compliance with all internal requirements for data integrity and reproducible research, actively interface with the internal and external scientific and technical community and participate in technology evaluations and software/database usage training.

  • A Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Biostatistics or related field with a minimum of 6+ years of relevant experience working on bioinformatics projects is required.
  • Experience in hematology is required, with a preference for experience in multiple myeloma or lymphoid malignancies.
  • Prior working experience in a computational biology, bioinformatics or related setting, is preferably with an emphasis on clinical oncology biomarker analysis, including high dimensional data integration, gene expression analysis, next generation sequencing analysis, survival analysis, and biological network inference.
  • Experience is required in working within the clinical development processes (from protocol design up to data analysis and reporting) and familiarity with clinical trial data types.
  • Demonstrated record of scientific accomplishments, including publishing work in journals, participating in patent preparation, oral presentations is required, with a preference for work related to discovery and development of therapeutic agents.
  • Statistical analysis experience with working knowledge of regression analysis, multivariate data analysis, and linear/nonlinear mixed effects modeling and proficiency with classification and machine learning methods is preferred.
  • Strong R programming skills, as well as working experience in Unix/Linux and cloud based computing environments are required. Scripting language experience (e.g. Perl or Python) is preferred. Other high level programming (Java, C++, etc.) and database (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle) experience is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and written skills are preferred.
