The Role
Position PurposeWhat's the role - The Deer Park Chemicals Process Chemist Team Lead provides direct day to day as well as medium to long-term support to Olefins (OP2, OP3), butadiene (BD3), crude isoprene extraction (CIPX), hydrotreater-2 (HT2), hydrotreater-3 (HT3), cumene/phenol 2 unit (PAU2), and South Effluent Treater (SET). The role requires understanding of processes, impacts from changing feedstocks, impurity build ups, fouling potentials, product quality impacts/risks to ensure safe production and reliable operation. The role combines multiple skills in analytical chemistry, process chemistry, process engineering, reaction chemistry, and corrosion chemistry skills to understand what is occurring in the production units at the molecular level. This skill set supports the Production Team with process impurities identification and reporting/routing (feedstocks, mid-stream, products, byproducts, and effluents), corrosion control, fouling, process additives, stream physical and chemical properties, reactive hazards, and reliability improvements.The Process Chemist Team Lead works closely with Production, Process Engineering, PEI, and I&PC disciplines to achieve Production objectives and further provides process troubleshooting expertise, optimization consultation, and support of test run initiatives. The role provides guidance for product quality issues and chemistry related issues that impact unit reliability. Sample schedule reviews with Production Teams for fit for purpose sampling and analysis (sample rationalization) is conducted at least annually. The Process Chemist Team Lead can be called upon for consulting for chemical cleaning/decon for turnaround work, supporting product quality investigations, and specialist sampling requests. This role serves as the SME for sample station design and use.In the lab environment, they support Goal Zero in actions and behavior while championing safety by identifying and escalating safety issues through safety engagements and Sphera reporting. They are the subject matter expert for product specifications and the analytical methods used for product measurements. They are also the subject matter expert for HSSE issues in the lab (chemical compatibilities, health risks) and partner with Industrial Hygiene and the Safety department as needed. The process chemist Team Lead is the Product Quality Focal Point for Chemicals and provides the highest level of technical assurance in the lab, working closely with the Application Specialist and Analytical Chemists. The Application Specialist and Analytical Chemists will report to the Process Chemist Team Lead.Dimensions:Balancing Production needs from multiple units on a daily/weekly basis.Ability to manage multiple competing priorities is essential for success.Effective communication is critical for managing stakeholders and teams in Production, the Disciplines, and the Lab.Lab Dimensions:The QM department supports Chemical operations at the Deer Park Site.QM is involved in several "must wins" at the Site (e.g. feedstock flexibility, cost leadership, right molecules/right place).QM is a key stakeholder in EQP and GMP Downstream work processes.Skills & RequirementsWhat we need from you - Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.A BS, MS, or PhD in Chemistry is required.7 or more years of relevant work experience.Previous experience in unit processes support (e.g., distillation, extractive distillation, solvent extraction, hydrotreating, reactors/conversion units, and effluent treating) is preferred.The successful process chemist is skilled in a variety of analytical methods (e.g., GC, GC-MS, S/N, Speciated sulfur methods, XRF, titrations).Company description Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies with about 84,000 employees across more than 70 countries.
