POSITION OBJECTIVE
A4A's environmental affairs team works to support A4A members in driving environmental progress and improving the environmental sustainability of the industry while ensuring the industry's ability to continue to meet the public's demand for air transportation services and remain a critical contributor to sustainable economic growth and prosperity.
The Environmental Affairs Director will work within the A4A team to advance that objective with a principal focus on international issues. The Director will apply legal, technical and policy expertise to assume primary responsibility for and lead work on a broad array of international issues as well as certain, predominantly domestic issues, including water quality, as they relate to commercial aviation. The Director will coordinate with and work closely with other members of the Environmental Affairs team, reporting directly to the Vice President of Environmental Affairs. Significant international travel is required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
International
- Lead A4A participation in ICAO/CAEP processes to develop international standards for aircraft noise, aircraft carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and aircraft engine emissions (particulate matter and NOx).
- Assist in / lead advocacy activities concerning ICAO/CAEP and country/region-specific efforts regarding international goals and standards, market-based measures (including CORSIA), environmental taxes or charges, and aircraft noise restrictions.
- Coordinate with and support other members of the A4A Environment Team on international issues as they relate to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
- Support A4A coordination with other advocacy groups, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG).
- Engage with and monitor activities of other international bodies (e.g., the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and foreign governments as appropriate to promote A4A policies and actions.
Other Issues
- Lead and/or assist in addressing select, predominantly domestic issues including water quality.
- Coordinate with and support other members of the A4A Environment Team on other issues, including air quality, domestic aircraft noise, regulation of chemicals, waste and remediation and SAF.
- Coordinate with and support other members of the A4A Environment Team regarding ongoing work to monitor and advocate for research and development carried out through governmental and/or quasi-governmental organizations.
General
- Assist in/lead preparation of analyses (for example, legal, technical or economic) to support formulation of A4A policy, strategy and positions.
- Prepare written materials, including background/issue assessment documents, comments on proposed regulations, position papers and correspondence regarding environmental issues impacting aviation.
- Work with A4A environmental team and member airlines in formulating strategy, policy and positions on relevant issues.
- Review and assess relevant data and reports.
- Represent A4A and association's members on relevant working groups.
- Position requires highly developed legal skills, although it also requires technical and policy acumen and is not in the legal department.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- Law degree from an accredited law school
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in relevant environmental and/or international practice, preferably with deep experience in aviation-related environmental issues
- Strong analytic, research, writing, organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to facilitate communications and develop consensus among members and other stakeholders in a professional, positive manner.
- Must have demonstrated ability to: manage multiple tasks concurrently; work well with colleagues in a collegial environment; develop working relationships with stakeholders; synthesize technical information in a policy context; and interact on a professional level with lawyers as well as non-lawyers in diverse fields.
- Proficiency in using web-based information and data management tools.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Significant international travel is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- All A4A employees must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
- If approved by your department supervisors A4A employees have the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays. All employees are expected to work in the office Tuesdays through Thursdays.
