Position Summary

Key to the FARMER FOCUS growth strategy is the ability to control, maintain, and improve environmental operations for SVO, its employees, and contractors while providing premium organic meat products. The position is tasked to ensure all environmental monitoring is kept updated by the regulations of 40 CFR, an environmental committee is established, and an environmental management system is in place that corresponds with ISO 14001. The Environmental Coordinator will carry out the day-to-day operations of the EHS department and contribute to the application of effective environmental management and compliance.

Essential Functions Statement (s)

  • Leads an Environmental Committee to make decisions and measure carbon footprint with a goal of Net Zero Carbon Emissions.

Monitors a recycling and composting program, and tracks waste management metrics.
Records and analyzes wastewater treatment data.
Maintains and develops membership with the Virginia Environmental Excellence Program.
Retains partnership with the Pure Water Forum.
Keeps track of environmental compliance such as inspections, trainings, etc.
Handles proper disposal of on-site chemicals and potential hazardous materials.
Monthly Daily Monitoring Reports submitted directly to the Local Sewer Authority, HRRSA each month.
All non-compliance issues handled with professionalism and promptness.
Establishes community environmental outreach events.
Must be mobile and willing to work on-site or off-site as required.
Works closely with the VP of EHS on direction of environmental program developments.
Interprets standard compliance with CFR 40 regulations, CFR 1910 regulations, and ISO 14001 standards.
Establishes environmental training for SVO employees, wastewater operators and farmers

Position Requirements

  • Academic: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field.

Knowledge of Environmental Sustainability, Management, Policy/Regulations, & Health.
1 - 3 years of directly related experience, college internships will be counted
Understand basic concepts in field of study
Fundamentals of wastewater pretreatment
Working use of Microsoft Office
Bring a creative and hardworking mindset every shift
Complete short- & long-term goals
Communicates and interacts with employees, authority and agencies, farmers, and community development
Basic GIS skills

Work environment:

Will be required to adapt to change of location on days off-site from the office that may have varying weather climates such as extreme heat to cold. Work conducted primarily in an office environment but will be required to access the production environment and warehouse environments. Must be able to tolerate the varying heat, wet and chill of the plant. Hearing and eye-protective equipment required in the production area. Required to wear hair and beard nets in the production area.

Responsibilities Description:

  • ISO 14001: 2015
    • ISO 14001:2015 is an international standard for organizations that choose to develop and adopt an Environmental Management System (EMS) procedure to enhance its environmental performance. ISO 14001:2015 states that the organization shall identify aspects and impacts, objectives and targets, and pollution prevention plans. It is the responsibility of this position to continue monitoring and developing the environmental management system that is in place at SVO.


  • Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP)
    • To become a member of VEEP, SVO created an environmental management system and implemented it in its HSEPs. The VEEP program shows SVO's commitment to environmental stewardship and enhancement. VEEP was established to encourage excellent environmental performance. This position is responsible for monitoring the EMS on a normal basis and report annual metrics to the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) for the renewal process.


  • Wastewater Monitoring
    • Wastewater reports are sent to the Local Sewer Authority, HRRSA each month. This position is responsible for collecting all reports from the wastewater operators and developing a report to be sent out each month. In addition, the data from these reports are implemented in the EMS to compare previous yearly numbers. All monthly reports and wastewater reports are filed to stay in compliance with the 40 CFR.

HSEPs
  • HSEPs are procedures put in place by the EHS department to ensure that there are protocols put in place for safety and environment. This position will be responsible for being familiar with the HSEPs that involve environmental procedures. All needed changes to environmental procedures will be taken care of by this position.


  • CFR 40
    • The CFR 40 will be followed by this position to stay in compliance with environmental agencies. CFR 40 is described as "Title 40: Protection of Environment is the section of the CFR that deals with EPA's mission of protecting human health and the environment." This position will be responsible for ensuring that all procedures, protocols, trainings, and monitoring comply with the regulations of the CFR 40.


  • Chemicals
    • Proper disposal of chemicals will be handled by this position. Once chemical totes are empty, a scheduled pickup date will be coordinated by this position. Plaques and a Bill of Lading (BOL) will be followed and given to the driver that collects the totes. Additionally, this position will ensure that all chemical totes and drums are in the proper areas.


  • Recycling & Composting
    • A recycling program will be established by this position. Recycling items will include paper, cardboard, and food waste. Dave's recycling will collect cardboard and paper from the SVO facility. Food waste will be put in a compost bin and then used on the garden beds by the facility. It is the responsibility of this position to track how much waste is recycled and implement the metrics in the EMS.
