Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director of Academic Advising in the College of Science and Mathematics Student Success Center (CSAM-SSC), the Biology Major Academic Advisor advises a caseload of biology major students and develops first-semester course scheduling for new students in the Department of Biology. This position develops, coordinates, implements, and assesses a variety of activities designed to assist Science and Mathematics undergraduate students in their transition to University life, to ensure that they enroll in appropriate courses, to help them find appropriate department/faculty advising and resources in their major program, and to stay on track to timely degree completion. The Academic Advisor collaborates with the Biology Department Chair and faculty to provide a program of developmental and holistic academic advising throughout the four years of undergraduate study in the biology major; supports biology major transfer students with onboarding, credit adjustments, and schedule creation to ensure timely degree progress and completion.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supports the execution of a comprehensive and holistic academic central advising program that addresses the needs and promotes academic success of biology major students.
  • Collaborates with the Biology Department on student success initiatives.
  • Provides cross-training about biology advising to advisors from other departments.
  • Provides academic advising to biology major students, including course selection, developmental advising about career and major choices, intrusive advising for at-risk students, and academic coaching.
  • Maintains a caseload of undergraduate advisees from their admission into and graduation from the biology major program.
  • Maintains currency in the theory and practice of Academic Advising; in the University policies and procedures that impact biology major students.
  • Collaborates with Admissions, Student Academic Services, and the Biology Department to facilitate the onboarding of new First-Year and Transfer students.
  • Collaborates with University College and the Biology Department to facilitate the transition of University College students who enter the biology major.
  • Assists with development and delivery of new student orientation and family orientation programs.
  • Helps biology majors understand and successfully negotiate University processes, procedures, policies, and regulations.
  • Collaborates with CSAM Departments on College/University wide retention and advising initiatives to ensure the consistency and quality of advising across the University.
  • Creates an environment of support for biology majors through advisement, workshops, and activities.
  • Coordinates first-year biology major scheduling processes with enrollment specialists in the CSAM Student Success Center.
  • Tracks progress towards graduation of biology major students.
  • Teaches sections of GNED 199 Freshman Seminar.
  • Represents the CSAM SSC and Biology Department at University events and on committees as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of two year's full-time professional experience working in a higher education setting or similar organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
  • Excellent written, oral communication; and interpersonal skills.
  • Facility with enterprise applications and software.
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced, diverse, working environment.


PREFERRED:
  • Familiarity with and experience scheduling classes and creating student course schedules.
  • Familiarity and experience with STEM academic programs, especially in biology.
  • Experience with enrollment management initiatives.
  • Facility with Banner, DegreeWorks, Navigate, and other applications related to student academic records and student support services.
  • Familiarity with current understanding of core concepts, values, and competencies of Academic Advising.
