Position Description

This is a Conservation Staff Specialist 1 position underfilling for a Conservation Staff Specialist 2 position within the Department of Agriculture, located in Carson City. The selected candidate will be responsible for the research and analysis of information to include existing documents, reports and scientific literature related to the conservation, enhancement and/or restoration of sagebrush ecosystems in Nevada as related to the agriculture industry. The incumbent will work with multiple agencies, landowners, and other jurisdictions in the development of plans, methods, and procedures to ensure the success of the Sagebrush Ecosystem Program. Additionally, this position prepares professional reports and presentations to support recommendations for consideration of the Sagebrush Ecosystem Council (SEC).

The selected candidate will use approved habitat modeling and other scientifically vetted tools to ensure the highest level of defensible documentation to address habitat impacts related to anthropogenic and natural disturbance activities within the sagebrush ecosystem. The incumbent will be required to work closely with private landowners in developing rangeland and farmland management plans that enhance or conserve the habitats within the sagebrush ecosystem as well as the long-term sustainability of Nevada agriculture. Additionally, the position prepares and provides recommendations, seeks funding opportunities, and collaborates with other plant specialists in providing options to agencies and private landowners on effective treatment/restoration techniques to reduce or eliminate noxious and invasive species.

Conservation Staff Specialists assist in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures related to areas such as resource management, safety and training, fleet and inventory management, fire management and policy management pertinent to the assigned area of natural resource management, preservation, conservation and protection.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biology, ecology, natural resource management, forestry, parks management, fire management or related field and two years of professional experience in a relevant resource management field that included assisting in developing, formulating, and coordinating programs, policies and procedures; coordinating special grant programs and/or contracts; and coordinating training programs; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
