EFM is seeking a forestry professional to join a small, innovative, and collaborative team to participate in a wide range of forestland investment and management activities. The successful candidate will provide analytical and modeling support for current and future timberland under management through growth and yield modeling, harvest scheduling, and supporting property valuations. In addition, this position will support forest management planning that will include alternative silviculture, carbon offsets, conservation easements, and other non-timber income sources. They will also manage consultants and/or other staff for timber inventory updates and GIS.

EFM is open to applications from individuals with varying years of experience and expect that there will be considerable growth opportunities in this role with exposure to investment underwriting, investment management, and investor engagement. The role offers flexibility of location with a strong preference for a presence in the Pacific Northwest.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Growth and yield modeling and valuation
  • Model short-term and long-term forest management options for EFM properties.
  • Support acquisition due diligence analysis by analyzing wood and cash flows and performing comparative valuations under various scenarios, and creating maps and memos summarizing property characteristics, and financial analysis results.
  • Obtain and review seller inventory for acquisitions, conduct quality review, and manage inventory verification and check-cruise process on potential acquisitions.
  • Manage outsourced appraisals for year-end valuations and third-party opinions of value.


Inventory management and GIS
  • Oversee all forest data management, including database and file organization.
  • Source and organize data and create maps in to support acquisition and property management activities (GIS may be outsourced, but would be managed by this position)
  • Oversee timber inventory for existing properties, including cruise design, contract administration, model updates (growth & depletion) and associated GIS layer updates. Inventory updates and management may be outsourced but would be managed by this position.


Carbon
  • Calculate current standing carbon stocks (above and below ground) and use combination of cruise data and modeled outputs from FPS/FVS to calculate changes to carbon stocks on properties over time.
  • Design cruises and inventory protocols for potential carbon projects, manage cruise contractors and QA/QC processes, stratification, ensure data quality meets protocol statistical standards.


Other
  • Perform property and fund metrics reporting.


Desired Qualifications

The Forest Information Systems Manager should possess strong initiative and a commitment to conservation as well as be a creative thinker. The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, and highly developed analytical skills. They must be able to work at all levels in an organization, have excellent relationship building skills, possess a strong work ethic, and should demonstrate the commitment to fellow co-workers necessary to excel in a team environment while also being able to work independently. They are results-oriented, highly organized, and able to efficiently manage several diverse tasks at the same time to meet demanding deadlines. Finally, the ideal candidate will be excited to contribute to the near and long-term success of this keenly focused and highly accomplished forestland investment management firm.

  • 10 years experience in forestry information analysis, with at least 2+ years in the private sector.
  • Experience working with ArcGIS.
  • Experience working with forest projection and growth and yield applications including Forest Projection System (FPS) and/or FVS.
  • Solid foundation in Access database management and programming including VBA.
  • Coursework/training in forest biometrics.
  • Experience managing all aspects of a forest inventory-design, plot installation, data compilation, and reporting.
  • Exposure to and/or experience developing or managing inventories of forest carbon projects.
  • Minimum of B.S in forestry, M.S. in forestry ideal.
  • Excitement about the role of forests to address climate change.
  • Ability to travel and perform occasional field diligence, including work in remote, steep rugged terrain and inclement weather. A company truck is available.
