ERM is Canada's leading sustainability consultancy. Members of the ERM team help our clients advance sustainability related priorities, including collaborative, clean and inclusive science, research and innovation policies and programs, as part of the transition to a clean and low carbon economy.

As a member of this team, the Senior Technical Consultant will contribute to projects that involve technical subject matter, technical methodologies, or other areas requiring understanding of complex systems. While ERM does provide engineering or scientific services, this role is focused on the use of technical knowledge and skills to strengthen our work in a number of sector and services areas including: contaminated sites management, clean energy, climate change adaptation, and risk management. You will manage and contribute to a wide range of public and private sector projects focused on the design and delivery of complex policies, programs and initiatives, as well as capacity building and engagement with diverse groups - including government, industry, finance community, indigenous organizations and the public. Familiarity with environmental, health and safety management systems is a strong complement to the role.

This role will provide expertise and advice related to science, innovation, clean economy (SICE) programs and initiatives in Canada and globally, and leading projects that take a proactive and long-term approach to forwarding these initiatives

YOUR ROLE

The Senior Technical Consultant is accountable for:
  • Researching, analyzing, and synthesizing technical issues and data to assess challenges, risks, and potentially conflicting information
  • Developing and applying practical and applicable methodologies, tools, and techniques to help clients identify, assess, and manage risks - especially those related to sustainability issues (e.g. environmental protection, climate change risk, socio-economic benefits) - aligned with established risk principles and approaches (e.g. ISO 31000, EPA)
  • Supporting the design and implementation of tailored approaches to gathering input from varied stakeholders, including facilitating group decision-making discussions
  • Managing all aspects of projects, including developing work plans, tracking performance against budgets, leading project teams and liaising directly with clients
  • Completing required research, interviews, and running multi-stakeholder workshops, then synthesizing collected data and information to prepare clear and compelling reports and presentations that contribute to the successful completion of a consulting engagement
  • Contributing to business development and marketing activities in the firm by activating your own network, extending this network over time, and preparing client proposals
  • Supporting internal initiatives and practices that contribute to the growth and diversity of Stratos as a firm and as a team

YOUR BACKGROUND

You have education and experience relating to sustainability and natural resource management. Knowledge of Canadian environment and sustainable development issues, as well as experience in fields such as environment studies, public policy or economics, are strong assets. Of note, your ability to meet the current vaccination protocols of Federal Government of Canada is required in this role.

Education and Experience
  • Science or Engineering degree and/or Masters level degree required in a discipline related to natural resource management or sustainability
  • At least five years' experience working in industry to advance sustainability initiatives, including those related to climate change, energy, conservation, and/or socio-economic objectives
  • Strong knowledge of international sustainability-related standards and initiatives and how these can be applied within corporate strategies and management systems
  • Previous consulting experience is highly desirable
  • Confidence and experience in using meaningful data visualization and data solutions tools is desirable

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (in speaking and writing), as evidenced by clear and respectful communications with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple client/stakeholder deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Ability to manage projects and teams, including developing and monitoring budgets, timelines, product quality, and internal project status communication
  • Ability to plan and facilitate effective and inclusive meetings and workshops that engage all parties and generate outputs and outcomes that meet the established objectives
  • Working knowledge of French is an asset
  • Facilitation accreditation or equivalent experience is a strong asset
