NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. NRDC is seeking a Director, Peer Review to work with the Science Office team in one of our Washington, DC, New York, or Chicago offices.Position SummaryNRDC is seeking a Director, Peer Review to manage a robust peer review process that ensures the accuracy and clarity of science-based information in all of NRDC's published materials including reports, briefs, fact sheets, web material and more. Reporting to the Senior Director, Science Integration, the Director, Peer Review will be a member of NRDC's Science Office and will work closely with the Policy Publications Editor and subject matter experts from across the organization to develop, review and publish scientifically accurate materials that support the mission of NRDC. Successful candidates will have a deep commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and can thrive in fast-paced environments that require flexibility in balancing multiple project demands.

Oversees and implements a continuously improving system for effective and efficient scientific peer review.Works effectively with the Publications team and subject matter experts across NRDC to develop, review and produce scientifically sound publication materials for diverse audiences.Applies critical thinking to evaluate materials for:The use of the best available and appropriate science, including appropriate statistical and analytical design and proper attribution of references and source material;Content accuracy, including numerical and graphics accuracy, and descriptions and interpretations of results; Content clarity, particularly relative to describing scientific, technical and quantitative methods, results, graphics and interpretations; andWhether the results, conclusions and recommendations are supported by the analysis and content of the report and evident to the audience.Makes content-related decisions with reasonable speed and communicates them in a clear and constructive manner.Treats all authors with fairness, courtesy, objectivity, honesty, and transparency.May manage a Peer Review Coordinator and consultants as needed.Contributes to the Science Office's efforts to foster a culture of excellence in research.Provides scientific oversight and support on articles, blog posts, speeches, proposals, strategies, and other material

PhD degree in a field of science, with at least 9 years of experience in technical writing and reviewing for scientific, policy, technical and international audiences.Technical knowledge and training in an environmental science.Excellent written and communication skills.Experience editing, authoring and/or reviewing scientific content.Excellent analytical and critical review skills.Highly skilled in project management with an ability to leverage broad multi-disciplinary and technical expertise to achieve project goals.Ability to work flexibly and quickly to meet multiple demands on time, while providing constructive and patient feedback to authors.Inter-personal skills and confidence to interact with, and influence, senior staff in the pursuit of consistent high standards of research excellence.Experience with research methods in the social and environmental sciences.Deep commitment to incorporating and growing the use of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles in NRDC's work.Deep commitment to incorporating and growing the use of science, scientific principles, and science-based tools in NRDC's work.Proven ability to manage projects and relationships in a complex/matrixed organizational structure.Interest and knowledge of emerging issues in environmental science and policy.Experience working independently and in collegial and collaborative group settings.Commitment to NRDC's mission and values.NRDC is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, both in our work and in our workplace. For this position, the salary is $125,000 to $140,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.
