The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is partnering with the Pacific West Region of NPS to administer a Fire Corps in 2022. The Corps Team will focus on prescribed fire and fuels work at three spectacular national parks in the region and will work directly with NPS fire staff participating in prescribed fires, mechanical fuels reduction, fire effects monitoring, educational outreach, preparation of burn units as well as pre-suppression and suppression readiness tasks. The team will start in California at Yosemite NP, then move to Sequoia-Kings-Canyon NP, and conclude at Crater Lake NP in Oregon. SCA and NPS will provide your training in the following disciplines to qualify you for fire work during and after your service:

+ Fire Training (S-130, S-190, L-180, ICS100)

+ Wildland Fire Chainsaw Training (S-212)

+ Wilderness First Aid

+ SCA Corps Member Training

Compensation Details:

+ One-time Travel Allowance: $650 once

+ Weekly living allowance: $400 / week

+ Housing provided

+ Meals provided on workdays

+ Eligible for an AmeriCorps education award valued at: $1,678.57

Workdays can vary and may require long days and weekends. Prescribed fire work demands a high level of fitness to work in difficult environmental conditions, including steep terrain, extreme temperatures, altitude, and smoke. Members will be required to pass the Work Capacity (Pack) Test (FFT2 Red Card Certification) at the "arduous" level. The Pack Test consists of completing a 3-mile hike with a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes.Arrival Location:, CACrew Living AccommodationsFor the duration of the season, crews should expect to be camping in front country and backcountry scenarios for the entirety of the crew. Members should plan to be mobile and expect to be traveling long distances in remote locations to get to their project sites. Members are expected to work together to ensure that all SCA equipment, vehicles, trailer, and tools are properly maintained and ready for use in the field. Personal vehicles are not recommended for this project. Crew members will have access to an SCA vehicle for transportation to and from work projects. Member Responsibilities

+ Ensure project, crew community, basecamp, vehicles, and general safety standards are upheld; full engagement is expected in all work projects and community activities.

+ Interfacing with general public and partner organizations in a manner that reflects positively upon the crew, organization, and agency.

+ Take on role of Hitch Leader for at least one hitch, serving as a professional liaison with SCA Project Leaders, handling the logistics of a project, meal planning, delegating responsibilities, developing emergency response plans, and completing all necessary paperwork.

+ Recording work totals and creating reports for submission to agency partners; this will include GPS field data collection and post-processing.

Member Qualifications

+ Commitment to living and working within an intensive crew environment; interpersonal skills and community living experience are pluses.

+ Commitment to service in working conditions that will include: extreme heat, extreme cold, high winds, and precipitation.

+ Ability to enroll in AmeriCorps Education Award Program.

+ Ability to pass SCA background check.

+ Valid driver's license; ability to pass Motor Vehicle Records check preferred

Training will be given for fire fighting, prescribed burning, and chainsaw use. Potential for training on manual transmission and use of tractor and bobcat-type equipment. Training opportunities will be given for below listed certifications.
