The role is on-site at our Indianapolis Manufacturing Plant and Distribution Center, not a remote opportunity.

Scope:

Heartland Food Products Group is a global leader in the consumer-packaged foods industry, supplying store brand solutions for the retail and foodservice markets. The Microbiologist is responsible for the sterility testing and microbial analysis of raw materials, ingredients and finished products for the Heartland Food Products Group Indianapolis site.

Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for the accurate microbial analysis of raw materials, ingredients, and finished products per Heartland procedures and GMPs
  • Guide and support laboratory technicians in daily tasks
  • Provide laboratory documentation for release of finished product on a timely basis
  • Ensure results are accurately recorded, reviewed and verified using Good Documentation Practices, GLPs and GMPs
  • Perform Internal Audits of the laboratory to ensure compliance and audit readiness
  • Identify trends and implement corrective action as needed
  • Lead and/or support root cause analysis investigations
  • Utilize aseptic techniques during sample preparation and microbiological/chemical analyses
  • Prepare test solutions, reagents, and culture media
  • Maintain proper labeling, handling, storage, use, and disposal of solutions, biohazard and hazardous waste, and microbiological cultures
  • Test environmental samples for microbial bioburden and indicator organisms
  • Create and review standard operating procedures to meet the needs of a growing business
  • Manage time and tasks efficiently while maintaining an exceptional quality of work
  • Think independently while working in a team environment
  • Be detail oriented while understanding the big picture
  • Occasional travel may be required


Qualifications:
  • A minimum of a B.S. degree in Microbiology with 3+ years laboratory experience
  • Experience in food microbiology required, preferred experience in aseptic product testing
  • Strong expertise in Quality Control and cGMP/GDP requirements
  • Experience with basic and advanced microbial testing methods
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Proficient command of English and strong communication skills required
  • Must be a self-starter and able to cover off-shift hours and holidays, if needed


Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to physically perform the functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to work seated using a computer and phone for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work extended hours, such as daily overtime and an occasional weekend
  • Must possess visual acuity to document company records
  • Continuous walking throughout plant and distribution center
  • Lifting up to 40 pounds
