Spotlight Therapeutics is aiming to unlock the full potential of CRISPR-based medicines by delivering cell-targeted gene editors in vivo, moving beyond AAV and LNPs. We have developed a proprietary platform to engineer CRISPR-Cas ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) for in vivo delivery to key cell types to treat diseases beyond the liver, beginning with cancer and monogenic diseases.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a mission-driven Scientist to join our Biology team to lead the monogenic diseases group. The person in this role will oversee efforts to progress our TAGE Platform in monogenic disease areas to advance programs and enable partnering opportunities. Our first focus is in ocular and hematopoietic stem-cell mediated diseases, with potential expansion into other therapeutic areas, such as neuronal diseases. The incumbent will lead both in-house research and external efforts. In-house activities will include oversight and execution in developing cell models for screening, testing of engineered RNPs, and identifying suitable disease targets. External efforts include management of CRO work and teaming with academic collaborators and industry partners. This role also will interact with, and possibly contribute to, immuno-oncology programs. There will be significant opportunities for professional growth and development in a fast-growing biotechnology start-up. This position reports to the CSO.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Apply / gain expertise in monogenic disease areas of interest to propose targeting strategy and disease gene targets
  • Develop models for testing in-house and identify CROs for testing externally
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff
  • Interface with academic collaborators and oversee CRO efforts to progress programs
  • Collaborate and communicate across research teams within Spotlight
  • Serve as subject matter expert for monogenic disease areas in internal and external discussions

Qualifications:
  • PhD in molecular and cellular biology, or related field, plus a minimum of 3 years post-doctoral experience (academic or industry)
  • Knowledge in the ocular disease space
  • Experience leading projects
  • Experience supervising junior research staff
  • Experience with primary cells, translational models / preclinical models of human ocular disease and cell biology techniques
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively to successfully design, oversee and execute experiments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Goal-oriented self-starter with a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Nice-to-haves:
  • Knowledge in the HSC, neuronal or immuno-oncology spaces
  • Experience with CRISPR or gene editing
  • Immunology background and associated skill sets
  • Experience with flow cytometry
