JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Hines lab (PSU, hineslab.org ) is seeking 2- 3 undergraduate summer field technicians to work on a project examining floral visitation patterns in bumble bees and the role of landscape factors on bee health (pathogens, community diversity). One student will assist a graduate student in collecting bumble bees from sites across North Carolina to assess pathogen loads and bee diversity as it relates to habitat type and quality. The other student(s) will assist a research technician in assessing community composition and floral resource utilization in bumble bees collected across Pennsylvania habitats. Data collected will be used to guide management of landscapes for supporting pollinators and to allow better understanding of distributional patterns in bumble bees, including patterns of bee decline.

The student will assist in field collection and identifying bumble bees and the plants they visit across sites of various quality in either North Carolina or Pennsylvania. The position in North Carolina will involve ~1 month of dedicated travel in North Carolina including 40 hrs./week from ~June 7 - July 10. The positions in Pennsylvania will run from June - August and may involve 10-40 hrs/week in the field depending on week and student availability. It will involve primarily outdoor field sampling and travel, including overnight trips, plus time processing specimens and data.

The position is open to current or recent undergraduate s pursuing a degree in the biological sciences, preferably with an interest in ecology, conservation, and the natural sciences. The student must be willing and, preferably enjoy, spending long days outdoors and traveling and be willing to handle bees.
