Job Description

BEM has an excellent opportunity for a mid to senior -level Geologist/Environmental Scientist to support the Federal Remediation group in Anchorage, Alaska. Our growing backlog of challenging projects throughout Alaska has created exciting career opportunities for an individual that is interested in conducting a variety of environmental services for remediation and compliance projects. This individual will work directly with project managers providing support to various projects, including developing sampling plans, leading field investigations (local and remote), logistical planning, subcontractor oversight, data analysis and site characterization and report writing. This position's main responsibilities are to support several projects under different managers, executing field investigations in challenging and remote locations, oversight and management of support contractors, maintaining compliance with Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, and preparation of reports while working under the guidance of experienced engineers, geologists and scientists.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support for the preparation of cost estimates and proposals.
  • Lead field investigations (soil, groundwater, sediment, surface water, and air).
  • Logistical planning for local and remote field activities.
  • Coordination of field events, soil characterization and field screening, monitoring well installations, groundwater monitoring.
  • Oversight of drilling activities using DPT and sonic methods.
  • Oversight of soil and groundwater remediation activities and demolition projects.
  • Provide office support for projects, including preparing permits, work plans, and technical reports.
  • Familiarity with ADEC Cleanup rules, regulations and guidance documents including 18 Alaska Administrative Codes (AAC) 60, 75 and 78, including emerging contaminants such as PFAS.
  • Current HAZWOPER certification per 29 CFR 1910.120.
  • Existing experience with the DoD or USACE AK District is a plus.


Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology/Environmental Sciences or another related field.
  • 7 to 10 years of professional experience conducting site remediation, including developing sampling plans, conducting field investigations and report writing.
  • Position requires full time residency in Anchorage or surrounding area.
  • Ability to pass a background check to allow entry to Federal installations.
  • Ability to conduct or provide oversight for field activities for up to 4 weeks in duration.
  • Meets the definition of a "qualified person" per 18 AAC 75 and 18 AAC 78.
  • Familiarity with completion of USAF or USACE Daily Quality Control reports is a plus.
  • Professional certification or licensure preferred, but not required.
  • Per DoD guidance, must have current COVID-19 vaccinations.


Abilities and Skills
  • Skills include soil logging, soil and groundwater sampling, field screening, etc.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and within established deadlines.
  • Ability to work extra hours during periods of high volume.
  • Ability to travel to remote areas for potential extended periods of time (2 to 4 weeks) to complete field investigations.
  • Familiarity utilizing GPS technology for the collection of field data.
  • Previous experience using digital tools (iPads) for field data collection documentation.
  • Proficiency with MS Schedule, Deltek Vision or similar management applications is a plus.
