POSITION DESCRIPTION

Compliance with the processing requirements of Chapter 215.422, F.S. is mandatory. Persistent failure to comply with this section by any agency of the state shall constitute good cause for discharge of employees duly found responsible, or predominantly responsible, for failure to comply.

Assists with coordination and implementation of resource management activities including all aspects of prescribed fire, exotic pest species removal, and hydrologic restoration efforts. Plans and coordinates restoration and maintenance of the parks natural communities, including supervising contractors and writing associated reports.

Performs an inventory of the resources and their condition through field collection, monitoring, sharing data with other researchers and managers. Analyze all available information to determine the status of the resources. Assists and coordinates various monitoring projects within the park to protect and manage the resources or better understand their function. Cooperates and assists other scientists with ongoing biological data collection. Assists with the development of grants and outside funding sources to accomplish resource management objectives.

Conducts educational activities to better acquaint the general public and park visitors about the parks resources and resource management objectives. Activities include teaching classes, conducting interpretive field trips, developing and distributing literature. Encourages and coordinates volunteer efforts to assist with resource management needs.

Assists with the preparation of management plans for the park(s), including seeking public input. Participates in planning or reviewing resource management goals and objectives at the office, department, regional and statewide levels, where appropriate, to ensure that site specific issues are being addressed. Attends and represents the park at various meetings and makes presentations as needed.

Operates and maintains vehicles, vessels, field equipment, and personal computers. Ensures all field equipment is properly maintained and operable.

Performs other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, INCLUDING UTILIZATION OF EQUIPMENT, REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION

Knowledge of and experience with: all aspectsof managing and restoring Floridas natural communities including the use of prescribed fire, writing burn prescriptions, burn zone preparation,mechanical fuel treatment methods, operation of equipment, and ecological effects of fire; wetland restoration techniques; native plant and rare species management; exotic invasive species removal. Knowledge of: the terminology and principles of the natural sciences and procedures forcollecting marine, aquatic and upland research and monitoring data; marine wetland, and upland habitats and associated species. Skill in and abilityto: operate a motor vehicle; operate fire equipment; operate tractors; operate mowers; operate pumps; operate hand tools including chainsaws,power tools, etc.; operate watercraft; operate personal computers and related software including Word, Excel, ArcView, statistical and databasemanagement programs. Skill in: developing biological inventory; use of prescribed fire for restoration; control of exotic plants. Ability to: collect,analyze and interpret scientific data; prepare technical reports on collected data; work in the field in all types of conditions including inclementweather, heat and sunlight and exposure to biting insects; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; work independently; deal with the publicin a tactful and courteous manner; schedule work assignments using problem solving techniques; maintain a valid drivers license; participate in allaspects of the parks prescribed and wildfire program; successfully meet position-specific Division of Recreation and Parks Burn Standards forPrescribed Fire; attain Florida Prescribed Burn Boss Certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Successful completion of annual moderate pack test. Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced. Pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25 pounds in under 30 minutes.
  • Florida Class E driver's license or an out-of-state class equivalent driver's license.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree from a college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences; or a bachelor's or master's degree from a college or university with a minor in one of the physical or natural sciences and 2 years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences.
